.... Good? Bad? Ugly?

Interested to hear people's thoughts on this lens. I'm looking for a versatile walk-around lens to replace my (Canon) kit lens.

Cheers.

Had one ages ago and it was very good for the money, no complaints at all and one of those you wonder later on why you sold it

Used to love mine on the D300 but not keen on the D700, gets pretty soft at the edges.

And the flipside...

Mine was awful. Really really soft at f/2.8. Whilst it was sharp as a tack at f/5.6, I didn't buy an f/2.8 constant aperture lens to not be able to use it at f/2.8.

My worst lens purchase ever I'm afraid.

As I've said many times, Sigmas can be great but their quality control is garbage and it's a total lottery whether you get a good one.

i can not believe you described the same lens as mine. mine in pentax mount is a cracking one , very sharp in 24-50mm @2.8, slightly drops in sharpness in 50-60mm@2.8, but still acceptable. i did some research against Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 before i bought it. there were lots of positive reviews on internet.

I don't doubt yours is a good one, I'm just making the point that their quality control is hopeless and the variation in their lenses can be huge.

The 17-70 I had before the 24-60 was bought brand new yet had to be sent to Sigma UK immediately to be calibrated properly!

If I ever buy another Sigma, it'll be a used one which I know is a good copy. I simply won't risk buying a new one again.
