I have just been offered this lens at a great price.
What do people think about it? I want to know before i go spending my cash.

Thanks
Mike

HSM or not?

I have the HSM version and considering it's about a third of the Nikon equivalent, it's actually a damn good lens! HSM is the one to go for as it's a lot faster and quieter to focus. :)

My dad has one and uses it on a 40D all the time, sharp as a tack.

same as above, ive used mine for anything from motorsports to portraits to low light photography work and as mentioned its cheap and cheerful, a worthy wide zoom with the added bonus of f2.8 across the board

I didnt know they did a HSM version, i cant seem to find it on www.warehouseexpress.com , am i just being blind? Haha!

How does this compare to the Nikon kit 18-55 for quality?

if its the non macro version with the 67mm thread I'd not bother. its not as sharp as the macro version and is very prone to CA wide open.

HSM is only in Nikon mount because of the D40(x)/D60 not having internal focus motors

This very lens is reviewed in November's Outdoor Photography, by Ross Hoddinott..

The only downside apparently is that the manual focusing ring is "narrow". Pluses were close focusing ability, solid construction and hardwearing EX finish, useful focal range and fast (constant) maximum aperture.

General image quality was described as "very good".

Thanks for your help guys, should be going to get the lens on Saturday :)

Mike

All current models should be HSM now, the old non-HSM is discontinued. It should be noted that this lens has just a conventional AF motor and not proper ring-type HSM, but is still pretty good nonetheless.
