Just seen this lens, WOW. Looks unbelievable. They have done it again, didn't think they could have topped that 35 but it looks like they have...

Looks like an amazing lens. 18-35mm f/1.8 to cover wide to standard focal length, and then maybe a 50mm/85mm prime for extra reach and you've got a nice DX kit sorted.

DX only, Booooo!!! Meh, It'll probably back focus anyway :p

Looks superb, at least they're upping their game. Nikons DX lineup is stagnant to say the least.

Also a first ever f/1.8 zoom is a big deal. Will be watching this one closely as the missus may want to sell her D700 and change to a DX camera

Wonder if it will take as long for this to beome available as that usb thingy that has yet to make an appearence.

A question regarding a comment on dpreview

They say:
"The lens will offer the light-gathering and depth-of-field equivalent of a constant F2.7 on full-frame,"

I thought that light gathering ability did not change across formats?

Bah, DX only ... was all set to put my 24-70 up for sale there for a minute.

Looks very nice though, really liking Sigma's new design

Tbh some Sigmas need more than even MA can fix, just need to read peoples posts on this forum.

Dx is smaller then Fx sensor there for that lens gathering less light compare to Fx lens? it didn't say average per pixel just over all.

But they will still need the same exposure wouldn't they?

ie
fx, f2.8, iso 100, 1/100s

will give the same exposure as

dx, f2.8, iso 100, 1/100s

In the spec they list the max aperture as f1.8. That's all we need to know really.

Any guesses on the price?

There is nothing to compare it to really, so quite hard to judge, £1000-1200 ish, would be my guess.

Rumours and guesses seem to be varying wildly but I suspect you're looking north of a grand at release maybe somewhere in the £1500 ball park.

I do hope I am wrong though as no matter how good it is I doubt it will sell if it's a penny over a grand.

put it this way. if you put a dx lens on a ff camera it will not cover the whole sensor area compare to the same lens designed for ff lens. thus it gather less light compare to the same ff lens.

:help:

Sigma say it's f1.8 and until someone else proves otherwise... :D

Equiv talk can make your brain ache :gag: :D

Have Sigma given up on Pentax (K) and Sony (A) mounts? Seems strange to put all that effort into a new lens, then not open it up to the widest possible market.

If like Tamron, they take a while before they release in K & A mount.

Range is too short really. 27-53 equivalent? Just about ok for landscapes and some portrait work but not really a good general range. It's a nice proof of concept though.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this lens is reviewed. I originally, would never have entertained buying a sigma lens. Years back their target market was lower cost, cheap lenses. The last 3 sigma lenses I have owned have blew me away (70-200 OS, 35 1.4 and 85 1.4)

Out shooting this morning with the 70-200 on the D800 and its razor sharp. Done a shoot on Sunday with the 85 1.4 and it is astonishing.

I hope they keep up this trait. The 35mm 1.4 has set the bar high for them seeing as it betters both of canon and nikons offerings. The days of 3rd party lens snobbery should be numbered

nice to see us DX lot getting looked after and I do love a sigma :)
