Hi all looking to get a replacement standard zoom lens for my canon 400D to replace the 18-55mm canon kit lens, with a budget of £250ish would the 17-70mm sigma be the best buy? what do people that have got this lens think of it?

thanks

I have a sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC MACRO, very happy with the performance, also picked up a 70-300 from the same stable i was that happy with it. It recieved very good press and ratings when i was researching lenses and bodies late 2007

6 steps to a great purchase

been considering it for a while now have read alot of internet reviews just wanted to get some 'real' peoples opions too, thanks for the feedback mate, have just found it for £215 so seems a steal at that ;)

i have the 17-70 sigma, and it's a good lens.....i also have the 24-70 F/2.8 EX DG macro, which is far superior..and i got it from microglobe for around the £270 mark..

if you don't need the width of the 17-70,then it might be worth considering the 24-70..especially with the constant F/2.8 aperture..

hope this helps

The 17-70mm is a great lens, sharp, nice bokeh, and good value. By all accounts the 24-70mm is a cracker, but I personally find that 24mm is slightly too long on a crop body.

Good lens overall. I'd say that, stopped down, my copy is as sharp as my 50mm 1.8. OK-ish build quiality - mine "loosened up" after about 6 months and the zoom began to creep when tilted up or down, which can be very annoying in certain situations. It focuses extremely close up which is another +, and the f/2.8 can also be useful. Mine is the non-HSM version - I believe there is now a HSM version for Nikon so it can focus on D40s etc.

I have had the 400d and also the 17-70 - its a brillianty lens compared to the kit lens. the focus is a little slow, it can hunt in low light, however thats a small price for its sharpness, bokeh, decent focal length. Its not so inyour face either like a 24-70mm

I just did the same thing, I also wanted a replacement to the standard kit for my 400D. I haven't had a chance to try it out fully as yet.

I can say the little play I have had, it did seem to focus very quickly. It is quite compact but a heavy little b****r! considering.

I also did my asking on here and was told it was an ideal replacement, giving great potential and the ability to use in a lot of situations - plus the wider aperture gives you more flexibility in lower light conditions.

The image quality is very good also. (Seen Examples). Macro capability as well - No brainer for me....

I bought mine from Warehouse Express and it was delivered the following day! £212.99. Stock is low now though so get in quick.

I would go for it.

I've used this lens in the past and cannot recommend it enough. The only downside to it is that f4 at the longer end. Constant f2.8 would have been awesome, but would have put it in a different league price-wise.

For me, it's the winner of the Sigma lineup, just fantastic value.

I had a 17-70 for several years as a replacement to my kit lens. Very pleased with it and have only just parted with it to get a 24-70 with a constant 2.8.

The 17-70 is an amazing lens, and a great walk about lens too! The fast aperture (compared to most "walk about lenses") is also a bonus and lower CA compared to the Canon 17-85 IMO. Great Value lens

I have used the Sigma fit version of this as a walk around lens on my SD14. Could not fault it but beware of CAs when wide open at 17mm.

tbh i think this is a cracking lens from sigma and i think they did there research well.

Thanks for all the replies guys has helped me out loads defo gonna go for it after so many positive comments

You wont be disapointed

I've had this lens for a couple of years, really really impressed by it. Nice and sharp (pretty much as sharp as my cannon 50mm 1.8), and well built (I use it when I go mountain biking, so it hasn't had an easy life).

So in summary, excellent for the price. Pretty much lives on my camera...
