I have recently bought a Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-70 DC HSM Macro lens "C". It gives excellent pictures and I am very happy with it. However, the optical stabllizer does not seem to be recognised by my Nikon D-5100 camera. The information screen shows the OS to be "ON" all the time, even with the OS turned off. The OS is extremely quiet, but taking shots of the same subject, it appears to be working with the switch turned "on" or "off". Has anyone else experienced this, or do you think the lens is faulty? I would be pleased to receive any comments, thanks in advance.
 
I had one on my D5100 and use it now on my D7000. I have never checked the exif data, always just assumed that it was off when I turned it off on the lens. You should be able to hear it running and you can clearly see it working through the viewfinder.
 
The OS is so quiet that you need to put the lens against the ear to hear, and it is almost impossible to hear then. As for checking in the viewfinder, any lack of movemt is so subtle. Is this normal?
 
I've just taken a couple of test shots with my 17-70mm on my D7100, one with OS on, one with it off. The EXIF data reports VR ON for both shots so, if yours is broken, so is mine in identical fashion. I suspect it's because it's a non-Nikon lens, especially as Sigma reverse-engineer their Nikon technology rather than licensing it.

I was wondering that, Jonathan, although I also have a Sigma 105mm 2.8 DG Macro HSM lens which reports both OS positions as ON and the off position as OFF. This is the newer Sigma 105 EX macro lens. Perhaps it is in the design of thr new "C" range of lenses.
 
I think it is a Nikon/Sigma problem. I have the same issue with the Sigma 17-50 on my D7000.
 
Thanks for the replies. It's not realy a problem as the lens gives brilliant pictures and the OS appears to be working OK when tested at slower shutter speeds at 70mm. However, it is so quiet when working. I agree that it is probably a third party lens combined with Nikon.
