I'm thinking of buying myself a Christmas present, and have seen both lenses for roughly the same price, but can't decide which one to go for.

I'm swaying towards the Sigma for the low light capability, although i'm not sure whether the IS on the Canon would make that a better choice.

I would mainly use the lens for just a walkabout, although i would also use it occasionally for BMX shots.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Andy.

The Sigma is only f/2.8 at the very widest end

You can also get the 17-70 with OS and think its f/4 at the tele end as opposed to f/4.5 for the non OS version

Thanks for the info, and i'll take it into consideration.

As the for the OS version, its a bit out of my budget

If your choice is these two lenses, go for the Sigma. I have owned one and it was great. Sharp, contrasty with a good close focus.

I'm not up to date with prices of these, so what is your budget? I'm guessing if you're shooting wider for the bmx stuff the 2.8 is the one to have but worth finding out at what focal lengths it slides upto 4.5 I guess if you don't already know to see how comparable the upper end of it's reach is. I'm guessing you've already discounted or are out of budget with the tamron 17-50 f2.8 (fast) or canon 18-135 (bit longer for walkabout) or 15-85 (heard goo things about IQ)?

Yeah i've thought a lot about it and i'm pretty set on the Sigma, as i've found one for £170.

And yes i've also looked at all of the lenses you posted, but they're all a little bit out of my budget
