Hi,

I am going to replace my Sigma 17-70 DC macro f2.8-f4.5

I was at Comic Con recently and my sigma lens was struggling in the very poor low light. My camera is Canon EOS 7D Mk1.

I was at the lenses widest focal length 17mm and the aperture should have been at f2.8. However it will not go below f4 so there is a problem with the electronics. I have phoned sigma who have verbal indicated that it could be circuitry issue !

The repair would cost £100 which is steep as this lens I have had for 7-9 years apx and I have taken it all over the world with me. Sigma offered a deal were I can effectively trade in the lens for the new lend for £270. Which I think is a pretty good deal !

My question is for the price of £270 ish what can I get that is better than the 17-70 DC macro f2.8-f4.5 OS HSM Contemporary lens ! ?

Many thanks

T

The short answer is not a lot, they are giving you £50 for what is effectively a b******ed lens.
It has 4 stop OS which your old one did not and that will make a big difference. Your nearest equivalents are the Tamron 17-50, the Canon 17-55 f2.8 and the Canon 15-85, all of which are dearer than the replacement from Sigma
If you were happy with the old one then basically go for it, you are getting a brand new lens with warranty on the cheap

Hi troutfisher,

sigma have informed me if I buy the 17-70 OS HSM contemporary model and register it on the sigma web site I will get a 3 year warranty !
Now that is pretty good as most manufacturers only offer that on very expensive lenses.

That answers your question, its a no brainer

Hi troutfisher,

yep I think that is a good deal for the warranty.
I just want ed to make sure before I parted with my hard earn cash that the sigma was the best deal out there.
I have even looked at Used lenses for sale and I would still have to pay more than £270

The Tamron SP 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II VC lens for cropped sensor digital cameras has a good write up, and if I do find a used one in the future I will buy one. As the write ups have been very good.
