What are your thoughts on the above named lens folks? I currently use a 17-85usm lens but need something a bit faster.
I'll be shooting freestyle dancing, inside a dance hall. I'll be quite close to the action. My body is a Canon 60D
Will it offer me more than my 17-85 in terms of freezing the action?

When I had Canon APS-C DSLR'S I bought a 17-85mm and to be honest I think it was one of the worst lenses I've ever owned. The IS, USM and focal range were all good but I was disappointed with the optical performance and ended up giving it away and buying a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8.

Anyway, you're looking at the Sigma f2.8 and I think it'll be a significant improvement over the Canon 17-85mm in all but zoom range. The constant f2.8 will depending upon the light level give you a better chance of keeping your shutter speed up unless you're using flash and this is less important but even then the f2.8 will give you more creative options and the general image quality will almost certainly leave the Canon lens way behind.

I think it'll be a much better lens than the IMO rather optically poor Canon lens.
 
I bought one earlier in the summer, for use on a 550D, so a similar proposition to you. I love it. I had the kit lens 18-55 prior to its purchase and use it for landscapes, portraits and candids. It is well built, the hood clicks on and stays put, the image quality is good for me esp coming from a kit lens, and I find it sharp wide open. A thumbs up for the Sigma 17-50mm f 2.8 from me, and having owned the Tamron equivalent as well i'd say they are both top performers, but i had a bit of a falling out with Tamron over odd autofocussing issues in Live View mode on my D7100, so i jumped ship and went with Sigma..... no regrets since and it spends 90% of its time on my camera

It was also my go to lens when i was shooting bands in local pubs/clubs

As for eglobalcentral....... never heard of them, but i would highly recommend the other more reputable Grey Importers, HDEW or DigitalRev, having bought from both of them on more than one occasion and never had any issues

Amazon have it at £275 but an extra £34 to get the flash is a pretty decent deal.
 
I've got the OS version and its been my most used lens by far. The only thing is, the OS doesn't like to be rushed. A little pause on the half press and all is good, but without that you run a real risk of blur. Of course if you don't get the OS, not issue for you to worry about.
 
I'm impressed by mine - massive step up from a kit lens. Nice and sharp too in my experience even at f/2.8 (although is sharper if you stop down). The only one thing I had to get used to was not inadvertently holding the focus ring whilst it was autofocusing as it moves.
 
Sorry, late to this thread. I have the OS version and I agree with others that it is a superb lens. A very useful focal range of course but for me it's the sharpness of the end product that is the winner, just tremendous. I bought mine a few years ago as an upgrade to my kit 17-85 Canon and its streets ahead. Really good value too. You won't regret it! Cheers G
