Sigma 17-50 2.8 - Any opinions?

I've always used Tamrons as my alternative to the more expensive manufacturer zooms, because when you get a good one they are amazing lenses. Thats when you're lucky enough to get a good one though, but having just bought ANOTHER one with back focussing issues (which is being returned) I've vowed never to buy another Tamron lens as I'm sick of having to go through several copies to find one that works as it should.

I'm now thinking about trying a Sigma 17-50 2.8 ( the newer HSM OS one) for my 60D.

Does anyone have any experiences ( good or bad ) with this lens? Anyone had to return any for focussing issues or anything? Or if you do have a good one, hows the IQ wide open?
 
I bought one from Amazon back in January. Found out after the event it was a grey import so it went back. Got another from WEX and have to say I'm very pleased with it. Very solid build and tack sharp on my Nikon D7000. Only slight negative is that you have to physically switch it to manual if you want to manual focus. But I'm being picky because 90% of the time I'm in autofocus mode.

I bought a 28-75 but was not happy with the focus.

Sent it off to Tamron and they checked it, need some parts which are about £2, but service, clean and with VAT going to cost an additional £130 to get it sorted.

May be should have bought a new one with 5 year warranty. Fingers crossed it comes back with the focus like my 17-50.

I went through 3 copies of a 28-75 the first time I got one and 2 copies the last time. I also had issues with a 70-200 VC. I did have a 24-70 which was excellent, but it was unfortunately the exception.

I was thinking of getting the 70-200 vc but may have to give it a miss and save up for either a nikon 70-200 v1 or a 80-200 f2.8.

The only way I would buy any Tamron again is from bricks and mortar store that I could test in / return to.

As I said they can be amazing if you do get a good one!
 
I bought one a while back and was really pleased with it. I had used the canon 17-55 2.8 IS umpteen times as i owned that then sold it. I was on the lookout for another when the Sigma was listed and bought it. I really was impressed. Not much difference if any to the Canon. I sold it on here when i switched to mirrorless but would definitely consider it again if required. It was great.
 
I picked one up a couple of months ago and it's a cracking lens. I read loads of reviews, watched the vids on YouTube comparing it to the Tamron and Canon 2.8, it came out on top in most of them so that's what swayed me. Most of them said the Canon is a bit sharper in the corners wide open, but it's such a slight amount that you'll not notice it unless pixel peeping. Which kinda makes it pointless to pay the extra for the Canon imo.

Get one, you won't be disappointed! :)
