Anyone got one? Whats the quality like compared to say the canon 18-55mm? Want a nice sharp lens!
Any example pictures with it? Want something for portraits or is this too short. The room im currently shooting in is quite small so i have limited space.

Any other suggestions much welcome.

Anyone?

I used a Tamron 17-35mm across a pub table the other night, bounced
flash (d'accord) with orange filter to mix with the ambient light.

It was the first lens I got for a crop-sensor DSLR, and I thought I would
use it for 35mm film too, but never have. It's a bit soft at the "long" end,
too short for most performance situations, and unnecessarily fast and
short on range for general outdoor stuff.

At 35mm you'll only need to be about a metre away for head & shoulders.

Dunno about the distortion levels of that particular lens but 35mm is probably a little wide for serious portraiture, even on a cropped body there ought to be some distortion not to mention as already noted your closeness to the subject and the lighting hurdles you might have to resolve.
If its just messing about stuff, it doesn't matter, but for a proper attempt at a portrait you'd be better off at 55.
Personally I'd shoot at 70 and upwards, but you need a little more room.

So the Canon 70-200mm F4 L lens should be okey? Think i might have to invest.

Well either that or a prime.
Given the choice, I'd shoot an 85 or something, although I wouldn't have any problem with using Nikons 80-200 f/2.8 zoom for portraits.
You'll get more use out of a zoom than a prime, couldn't say what's best for Canon.

You'll be able to use 70-100mm at 1.5m

So something with a fair amount of focal length, think ill have to save up for a 70-200mmL Lens.

Whats the best ish distance between the subject and the background and then the camera and the subject?
Is there a calculation to use??
