ok im looking at the sigma 17-50 or 18-50 f2.8. Who has experience in these lenses as the only difference i can see is that one has a 67mm Filter thread and one has a 77mm filter thread

Or am i right in saying one is OS and one isnt.

If so what would people recommend

I've got a 18-50 and have been pretty pleased with it, especially at the price. The 17-50 gets good reviews too. I suppose it comes down to budget and how much OS would be useful.

I have the 17-50mm f/2.8 OS HSM. It's a really nice lens for the price but my first copy was faulty out of the box but I was sent a replacement.

Only bad point for me was that even though it is a HSM model, the focus ring spins in AF and there is no full time override like other HSM lenses. I bought mine as a 17-50mm & 50-150mm combo on crop sensor for under £1k. I've owned full frame from both Nikon and Canon, and have no intention on going back to it so the lenses being crop sensor only is no problem for me :)

The new 17-50mm OS is MUCH better than the older sigma lens it is certainly the best of the third party lenses in this range with OS and not far of the canon equivalent. If you go without OS the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 is much sharper than the sigma 18-50mm f2.8

I had the 17-50 f2.8 OS HSM and returned it as for me it was too heavy. It made my 60D front heavy and gave me wrist ache. Was reasonably sharp though even at f2.8.
