I've just brought a sony a77 to go with the rest of my sony equipment I'm still waiting on the a77 to turn up from park cameras I ordered the expanded guide by David Taylor and that's turned up before my camera I had a flick through the book and came across a page about sigma lenses it says that some lenses will not autofocus and my 150-500 is on the list that's affected

It goes on to say that a firmware update on the lens will fix this problem I've never heard of this and dont have a clue where to start :help: it says a sigma service centre will do it free of charge

I really don't know what to do I was hoping to get this ready for moto gp in the next few weeks :help: they do work on manual focus but I'd like the auto focus to work too

Thanks for any help

The easiest thing to do would be to use the 150-500 on your old body (if [of course] you still have it!). Short of that, maybe a call to a Sigma service centre could tell you how long the job will take and asking nicely might get it dealt with as a priority.

Good luck (and enjoy Silverstone)!

Thing is the a200 body has got dust in the view finder and it shows up with the 500mm lens on this was a replacement upgrade

I'd like to think the a77 is twice the camera over the a200 and the reason for buying the 77 is because I like motorsport photography and I thought this would be a good set up

There's a chance it could have all ready been done I brought the lens used from London camera exchange and I don't have a clue what it was used on before will have to wait till the camera turns up to find out failing that I might have to manually focus it

Thanks for the help

it might work anyways, so dont worry too much till you have tried it.
focus peaking is really good anyways :)

if it's in the viewfinder it will show up with every lens on (albeit not in the image)... ;)

it's more than twice the camera :D

you could always phone Sigma UK with the lens serial no. & ask if
a) it's likely to be a problem (the A77 doesn't seem as bad in this respect as some earlier SLTs) & b) if it's already been back for the firmware update.

Have a word with Lez325, he is a regular poster on here and he uses a Sony a77 with a Sigma 150-500

Wait til you get your A77 body and try the lens - if it works, then you've not a problem, if it doesn't, phone Sigma and if they're offering a free firmware upgrade, then get it to them and have it sorted out - might be worth asking them if they could get it back to you before the MOTO GP...

Sigma will normally only offer a free upgrade if you are the original owner and have a receipt, otherwise it is chargeable.

Personally if it doesn't work I would be contacting LCE and asking them to pay for the work under their used warranty.

In response to your PM

I can see no reason why your Sigma 150-500mm will not auto focus on the Sony a77- may I ask why you think this would be???

Try it, make sure the a77 is set for AF and on the side of the Sigma 150-500 is a switch for AF/Manual obviously, make sure its set for AF the other switch ( OS)- is for image stabilisation -use setting No1 for wildlife or indeed motorsport, make sure this function is OFF if you use a tripod

Sigma will install/upgrade the firm ware on any Sigma lens but as said, You will be charged for this - around £35 when I had one of my older lenses updated, but so far this is all "What if" at the moment- keep me posted and if I can help it would be my pleasure

Les

Ps you WILL loose the AF if you and a teleconvertor of either 1.5 or x2

Try 10x the a200 and you'll be close :D

Thanks for the help so far looks like ill just have to wait till my camera is here ill be cutting it fine not sure how long park cameras are going to take they said 14 days that was a week ago if I don't get it till the back end of next week and I have got a problem then it only gives me a few days to get sigma to sort it

I don't want to risk not having the 500mm for silverstone so might have to take it as it is and manually focus it

I'm guessing THIS

really depends on how old the lens is to begin with though.

Agreed, did'nt see that

However: a free upgrade is mentioned on that link- so not a real problem- If as you say an older lens may be a problem, but the firmare upgrade will sort any issues

I think the OP's only problem could be the timescale. He needs the lens for a particular outing and is worried that he might not get the lens back from Sigma in time if it needs to be flashed with new firmware.

Well this has gone from bad to worse wanted to get my hands on my new camera so I could try my lens out and see where I stood with it

Rang park cameras this morning a week after ordering it said it will be dispatched within 5-7 days they've now told me they can't get it till the 3rd of sept 2days after the gp and I wouldn't of minded having it for a bird of pray handing experience I've got this weekend

So I've cancelled my order I'm pretty much jinxed I cancelled one order after I found out the place where selling gray imports and now this :bang:

Thanks for any help

Just had a look at my local shop's stock of the A77 - awaiting delivery. Sorry you've got to wait for it.

Hope you get something sorted for the MotoGP and the BoP day. (I got some great shots a few years ago using a UWA on (IIRC a D70))

Phone WEX to confirm stock levels...

3rd time lucky just placed an order with wex as of now it will be here tomorrow thanks for the link :)

Well the camera is here got it all set up with the battery grip at first the 500mm auto focus wouldn't work had 10 mins in the garden with it went back in to the house changed a few settings and low and behold the auto focus fires up

I'm well happy with it it feels great in the hand bring on the gp now :)

TBH, unless there's something a new firmware will add that you NEED now, I would wait until after the GP to update it (if you do it even then). There's always a small chance that there'll be a problem and if it ain't fudged, why fix it? (Of course, there may be a good reason to do a firmware update, in which case go ahead.)

Very glad WEX came through with the goods for you in plenty of time for you to familiarise yourself with it before the MotoGP.
