Have been looking at the Sigma 120-400mm lens with APO, DG, OS & HSM. Its the 4.5 - 5.6 one.

Does any one have any comments on these at all? It will be used with a 400D and as I already have a Canon 75-300mm (Non stabilised) feel that it would compliment the setup.

Thanks

Jeff

You're not likely to get many comments on this lens, as it isn't out yet....

you sure

Question: Is the Sigma 120-400mm f4.5-5.6 DG OS HSM Lens in stock?

Bristol Cameras Answer: As per most accessories listed on this website we do not have the resources to maintain stock info on several thousand smaller items. We keep many of the accessories on our site in stock and even if we don't have the Sigma 120-400mm f4.5-5.6 DG OS HSM Lens in stock, it is likely that it will be available from suppliers within 48 hours. However, If there is a problem obtaining this product, we will inform you of the delay within 48 hours.

Have been looking at the Sigma 120-400mm lens with APO, DG, OS & HSM...

I looked, but went for the 100-300mm f/4 instead... The 120-300 f/2.8 is even more appealing, but out of my current budget:)

The specs are good, and if it performs like the 80-400mm VR Nikon, it'll be a cracking lens..

That has to be the poorest response I have ever seen.. A camera shop calling a large lens an accessory, Not knowing or giving a straight answer as to if its in stock and then not even knowing if they can get it at all.

I spoke to them yesterday and they are adamant that they have got one in stock!!!!!

I shall just have to wait then.

Have just spoken to a mate in the States and he is bringing one back with him. Will be with me either very late tonight or early in the morning!!!!!!

Will be speaking to Weggy and seeing if we can get some shots together.

Trouble I have is that it is the first decent bit of kit I have brought.LOL Only have a 400d with the kits lens, a 75-300usm3 I brought from Weggy and a 50mm.

Am in the IOW next week so will definately be trying it out whilst I am there.

And it's here. Ishall get some pictures of it and take some with it later on today, if the weather improves!!!!!

And here is the new baby:

As soon as I have taken some pictures with it I'll let you see them.

You should try and take some decent shots with it ... lots of folks are interested in this lens and the bigger bro ... not many images around worth taking seriously. The 100-400mm IS L needs some competition.

Am off to the IOW for the week so will get some shots with it whilst I am there and put them up for everyone to see.

If anyone on the IOW wants to meet up and show me some good places for shots then my mobile number is 07816 165711.

You shoot these RAW 'Wysey?

If so, I would love to try and PP that Tiger shot or Eagle head shot if you don't mind sending the file. No worries if you do ;-) Looks very similar to the Bigma in IQ.

Shot them in standard format, sorry. Can send them over to you like that if you want me to.

I must I am very happy with the lens and am considering getting either a 2X t/c for it or maybe even a bigma and then let the missus have this one!!!!!!!

Some of the others look a little soft though.

That is just the processing. The sharpness, focus and shadow/highlight detail is decent and in RAW they would come out great.

I only do RAW ;-)

If you need more range you may be better getting the 150-500mm OS.

That robin is lovely and sharp! Some of the others look a little soft though.

That's my fault as that was the only one I could rest the camera to take the shot. All of the others were taken freehand as it were. Didnt help focusing through the wire mesh for the tiger, lion and leopard shots either.

Forgot to say that these are straight from the camera with NO processing etc afterwards. I have yet to do that on these.

Will look at the 150 - 500 and see what they are like. This month has been expensive with this purchase a 400d for the missus and holiday as well!

I know, that's why I was interested.

I never PP jpg's so no white-balance options and definately a lack of data in there ... but the Tiger would do well with a RAW file to work on, especially as shot wide open and 1/250. Was OS functioning? With the jpg's the PP adjustments tends to be a bit unsubtle IMO. The Eagle is Ok but a too soft to start with unfortunately. You can see the lack of detail in the feathers especially.

I'm a little supprised too at how soft they look too, I know a few are through a fence but for the rest handheld it's got OS, so surely it should produce sharper results than that?

They were shot on a 400d so the firmware updatew wouldnt have helped.

However, the 400d is now being replaced by a 40d and so it will be having the firmware flashed as soon as possible.

Many thanks for that.
