Sigma 120-400mm f4.5-5.6 DG OS

Been debated on here quite a few times.

I like the results from the lens, but it's a brute to handle.
I need a fence or a dyke etc. to rest it on.

Good lens, but you need a tripod.

This was taken with the sigma hand held and is a tad soft, with a tripod Im sure it could have been sharper. Oh and i managed to cut it's front feet off! :bang:

I love mine - really nice and clear lens, and you don't need a tripod :)

It's recently had a problem with it's OS, and is currently with Sigma being fixed

Maybe it's just me being a bit girly in the grip dept then!

I have this lens and I love it!

It is a bit heavy but once you are used to it you can use it well without a tripod, the shots below were without:

P.S Sorry about the border, I don't like it either! :suspect:

I have recently just bought the lens, only used it once so far but seems good. It is rather big and heavy, used it with monopod. Think it should be able to use it handheld with a bit of pratice. Looking forward to getting out there and getting a bit more pratice with soon :)

I have the 150-500 and I love it, yes it's heavy but it can produce the goods and the IS system is awesome.

I have one too and I couldn't agree more. One infernal net reviewer likened the image stabilistion system on this lens to witchcraft and I reckon he's right.

I had one briefly - really slow to focus and slow aperture! Wasn't for me.

Not the best shot (dodgy PP from me sorry) but the below was taken with my 120-400 hand held.

I like the lens and for the money its really good but would like to get the Canon 100-400 L at some point to replace it.

I'd rather go for a Canon 70-300 IS and crop in than get a 120-400, in all honesty.

I was close to buying a 150-500 recently for a safari I was due to be going on. It was recommended as pretty much the best alternative to the 100-400 L.

Thanks all,

still trying to work out best route, although I suppose its the canon but the wallet says Sigma :bang:

You could have a look at the sigma 100-300mm f4, better lens than either the sigma 120-400mm or canon 100-400mm and an extra f-stop faster, will take a 1.4x TC if needed, a faster sharper lens by a mile, one of sigma's better offerings

As Pete says, take a look at the Sigma 100-300mm f4. Took mine out for a pot shot at the moon tonight with the Sigma 2x teleconverter attached. THIS was the result which I didn't think was too bad considering it was 600mm hand held. To compare, a few hours later I did THIS with the Bigma .. also hand held.

I got a Siggy 150-500 recently and it is no problem hand-held, even at 500mm. merv:clap:

I had a 150-500 and the only issue I had with it was the noise it made - not sure if the 120-400 is better but really worth trying one I reckon to see if you can live with it?
