I would like to purchase in the next few month a longer type zoom lens. I am considering both the above. Both have VR/OS, 400mm etc. The Sigma can be bought almost half the price but i know Sigma have quality issues.Im told the Nikon can be slow to focus--what about the Sigma with the HSM? Anyone have any pics fro either lens and comments on either to help lead me in the right direction

My Sigma 120-400mm should arrive tomorrow, so I'll let you know what I think. Mine is a Canon fit lens but I should imagine the optics are the same. If you get a duff Sigma lens you can always send it back and get a replacement can't you?

The Nikon 80-400 doesnt have a built motor is is ment to be really slow to focus.

You could pop into Jessops and see how slow it is for you self.

The 80-400 is a dreadful lens, don`t buy it......:cuckoo:

You need to be aware of its shortcomings, yes it is a slow focusser..(sp), but, if used correctly it is a bloody good, compact and versatile lens.

I'm quite satisfied with my Nikon 80-400 VR. Yes, I admit that it's slower to focus than I might like, but for the price, you're not going to get better results (contrast, sharpness and very decent bokeh.) I've not used the Sigma, so won't comment on it one way or the other. I've used it on both a D80 and a D300, and find that the D300 seems to reach focus more rapidly, though I can't "prove" it.

I have the Nikon and yes it is a bit slow at focusing but with careful planning you can get some nice shots. Link to photos taken this weekend with it with very little processing a tad of sharpening and that’s it.

I would try them both in shop to se which one focuses the fastest
