At sometime in the not to distant future I'm hoping to upgrade my Canon 70-300mm non L lens and want to know more about the Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM.
I've had a look around here and on the net and can't find much user experience input anywhere. So the question is has anybody on here used this? I like the idea of f2.8 as this would allow both 1.4x and 2x extenders to be used with it and with an 1.6 crop would make a great birding lens (I hope).

Thanks Andy.

Have a look here, Micloi has one and it looked pretty impressive.

I looked at one the other day, however, it was for nikon, and what i really didn't like was that Sigma have left a little tongue sticking out of the rear of the lens meaning you cannot use a nikon 2X extender with it, so check that your canon one will fit

Yup it will according to info on this thread, which is basically the most comprehensive source of info about the lens on the net at the moment:

Fantastic lens. Here are a few shots I took lately:

You're certainly getting some nice results Michael

Sharpness aside, can I ask how you rate the AF servo tracking, compared to other lenses for example. The hawk shot above - did you use servo for that? How is the focusing ability affected by an extender?

Thanks.

AF tracking seems to be very good, better than the 100-400 and close to the 800mm.

The 1.4x does not affect the focusing much, if at all.
The 2x makes it a bit slower but still very usable.

how does the 120-300m with a 2x on compare against the 50-500mm os for af speed and image quality.

Image quality is better + it has 100mm advantage.
AF feels at least as good, if not better, but cannot compare as I do not have the 50-500 any-more.

Great comments, thanks.

Especially vs the 100-400L :)

Thanks for the link Mark, you are right there is a lot of input on that forum and I'll have to spend some time sifting through it all.

Some cracking images there Michael and lots of input from you both here and on POTN assuming it is you posting there with the same forum name. What's more to the point is you are saying the right things. I could save a lot of money by going down the Sigma route instead of L glass. :)

Thanks to all for looking and taking the time to respond.

If you want to meet and try it sometime give me a shout :)

Thanks Michael, that's a kind offer and you're not a million miles from me.

Cheers :)

I read the same thing on a French forum yesterday.

I've been searching for information about this lens (nikon mount) for motorsports photography but I hardly could found any information at all except on this French forum.
Perhaps it could be useful so here is the link:
