Just ordered my 50D and now I'm tempted by a Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 EX APO DG HSM Lens. Does anyone have one of these and is it a good buy or not?
 
yes I use one all the time, love the lens, nice fast focus speed, only problem with it, is it's bloody heavy to carry up big mountains :).

i wantthis lens but i want the 50D more first! so its will be a few more months yet!

Is it HEAVY heavy, I'll want to use it for football and they say it can be handheld and I'm not used to using a monopod..

I've had one for the last couple of months and I love it (although it is heavy I'm getting used to it!). I think I've got a fair way to go in getting the best out of it, but it's fun learning. Bought it from DigitalRev via an e-bay "buy it now". The listing included guarantee to refund any Duty/VAT, and was cheaper than going to the DigitalRev website. Lens received ok. I had to pay some tax on it, which I scanned the receipt for and e-mailed to DigitalRev. They immediately refunded the tax. Bonus of getting charged the tax is that I'd spoken to Sigma UK about warranty situation if I imported a lens, and they said it would only be covered if I had some proof of paying the import tax, so having the receipt, I should be OK there. Anyway, judging by the way it's built, hopefully it should be reliable....

I guess it depends on how heavy HEAVY is!! The pic of the goose was handheld from on a boat, and the cricket photo was on a monopod. You can use it handheld for short periods, but if you are watching/photographing a whole football match, you might benefit from some support. Lens, 1.4x converter and camera (40D) weigh a total of almost exactly 3.5kg.

It's a heavy lens, cant see you really handholding for more than 4-5 min with out a break, but saying that you do get used to using it with the weight. :)

Your Football use, are you standing or sitting, if your sitting no problem as you can rest your elbow on your leg to support the lens.

Is it hand-holdable?
Yes.

All day?
Yes.

Even if you're a not-very-large lady?
Yes.

Will you wish you'd remembered the monopod?
Yes, definitely!

use this lens for most of my sports pics, can be used with 1.4 or 2x convertor.

can hand hold for90 mins no problem,for cricket would use a monopod.

heavy to begin with but you get use to it, light enough to run with up the touch line if needed.

annoying feature is a poor lens hood fitting (maybe just mine) after 2 years of use lens collar screw needs replacing along with lens hood grommit.
does not fit in nice padded case that came with lens if the lens hood is fitted.
rating 9.5 out of 10.

pm me only just up the road. maybe meet up at footie game.:)

Usually standing. I might need to adapt my position or get a monopod if I get this!
