John, thanks for the heads up on this. I've been considering this lens for a long time and this seems to be a good price. I'm not sure what is "clearance" about it. I looked at other clearance items (cameras) and there is description for them mentioning damaged or missing pieces, with nothing like that for this lens, so I hope it is all intact and pristine. Anyway, it's ordered and we'll see how it goes. If there is a problem then it's straight back to Jessops for a refund.
Thanks again.
p.s. It's actually only a small saving (relatively speaking) over the £1699 for a new copy from Clifton Cameras, with full three year warranty from Sigma - http://www.cliftoncameras.co.uk/Sigma_120-300mm_F2.8_EX_DG_APO_OS_HSM - so it had better be minty perfect or I'll let them have it back. It's not clear to me whether the Jessops clearance stock will have that warranty. Hopefully it will. No real reason why it shouldn't, but you never know.
There were no faults described on the website, which there are for several other clearance items, so I assumed it was pristine stock. Unfortunately the box is a bit ripped up, the instructions were missing and the lens hood was completely split along its length so it would only loosely grip the lens - about as useful as a chocolate fireguard. I couldn't care less about the box and instructions, but in the UK the hood costs £157 to replace. There is nothing cheaper on eBay either. I phoned Jessops to ask for a replacement and they're stonewalling me. On one hand I am ****ed off because no faults were declared. On the other hand the lens is a peach and the price was good. Jessops did offer a full refund, but I've superglued the crack and wrapped the whole hood in black gaffer tape. It doesn't look so bad and is probably a worthwhile upgrade to the relatively fragile hood.
It's a big b****r and heavy too. It makes my 100-400 look like a toy, but what a difference shooting at a sharp f/2.8 makes vs a slightly soft f/5.6. Gaining 2 stops on shutter speed and/or ISO is going to improve results, I hope. Gaffer tape remedy shown below.
Sample from today, 300mm, wide open on my 7D, no edits....
That's a hell of a beast, great shot too, as they didn't declare the issues you may be able to push for a replacement but I doubt it, good buy all the same though
Cracking lens as always. Loses a little bit with a x2 on it, but what lens wouldnt! They may be heavy but I found it relatively comfortable hand holding whilst shooting flying puffins. This lens is a real gem in Sigma's range.
Don't know if it's any use but cguk do a 105mm aluminium lens hood on ebay for about £16. I assume the siggy is still 105mm? It screws to the filter threads.
Thanks for the tip. My repair seems quite effective so far, so it looks like I am OK for now. The thread is 105mm, so if I have problems down the line I know where to look. Thanks again.
