Sigma 120-300 2.8 S on 1.3 Sensor

I currently shoot motorsport/karting with a Canon 100-400mm 4.5-5.6 on a Canon 1D Mark ii body - its a great combo, I can get some really nice shots in good light, but once the clouds come over, it does struggle. So I am looking for a possible alternative to the lens, and all my searches keep bring me to the Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 Sports lens - but there are a few questions I can't find answers for...

- I see Sigma make lens for full frame, and 1.6x but none for 1.3, which my Canon 1D has - So, will this 120-300mm Sports lens work okay on the 1D? - What effects will it have?

- Also, in terms of converters. I can probably deal with losing 100mm on far reach, but then again, may be nice to get to 400mm-ish every now and then, so a 1.4x converter would be an option since I read this lens with a converter is as good as the 100-400mm - Would a canon or sigma 1.4x converter be best for a Sigma lens?
 
The lens will be fine on full frame as it's a DG (DC is for crop cameras) so it'll be fine on 1.3x and 1.6x too. Are there any lenses made for 1.3x? I don't think there is...

The lens will fit and function fine on a 1.3x crop.

Both Canon and Sigma converters will fit, but anecdotal evidence suggests the sigma converter may have the slight edge when used with this lens.

Also, as well as the 'sport' lens, consider the slightly older 'OS' version, but avoid the 'non-OS version
 
I've used my older OS version for some motorsport ( mostly birds for me ) with a 1.4, this was shot on a cold dull day back in March at Donnington. A great lens though a darn sight heavier than the 100-400.

Why is he to avoid the non OS version of the lens- its tack sharp and the reson why the lens got its good reviews worldwide. I use mine a lot and do many others on here with great results.
 
Yours may well be a good copy, I've seen your work so am happy to agree about your particular lens. However ive seen enough bad copies of it to put people off that version.

I'd say with good confidence that at the time your lens was manufactured sigmas quality control department left a lot to be desired
 
In my ,real world experience, in that I owned the non OS version rather than heard or read about them, it was a super lens and very sharp. The downside, for me, was that the minimum focus distance did not always suit me.
