Has anyone tried the Sigma 12-24mm on a D700?
A review of performance would be appreciated.

Not as good as the Nikon equivalent...
We tried out the Siggy 14mm and 12-24mm lenses and they weren't a patch on the Nikon lenses...lots of flare - if you can shield them from extraneous light, they're OK-ish...

That said we still have them on the shelves as they get used so infrequently - I had one in the bag for two years and used it...never...

I had one, and replaced it with the Nikon 14-24 instead, its OK if you can find a good one, but as mentioned already lots of flare and hotspotting issues.

I always looked for a reason not to use this lens, but always look for a reason to use the 14-24 now.

Ok thank you, wish i could afford the Nikon alas the D700 has dented my spending, or at least that is what the Wife says.
Might have to do without going wide wide for now.

I love mine and use it a fair amount. As mentioned above, can be affected by flare - use a French flag (sheet of black card or similar) to stop strong light directly striking the front element to reduce the problem. Some people have had problems with decentred elements causing softness to one side but buy from a reputable supplier and you can get a replacement or refund (may be harder from an e-bay or far-eastern supplier). I'm sure the Nikon 14-24 is better but it is also twice the price - since I have to buy my own kit and it's purely a hobby, the Sigma's the only choice!

On the D700, look out for your toes creeping into frame - the 95% viewfinder leaves a little blind spot all round!

I just bought a tokina 12-24 and the optics are excellent, some say on a par with the Nikon.Build and image quality are also both excellent.Under £300 delivered from Hong Kong with 2 year international warranty.

Keep an eye out for de centering lenses also, if you get a good one they are great

Jessops have just returned my money for the third Sigma 12-24mm I've had from them. All three were soft, all in different areas. Thought it was pretty good flair wise, especially considering the angle of view. The trouble with trying to French flag it is that it so wide you finish up with your hand or card in the picture. Shame as the 12mm end was a bit spectacular. In the past I've had a couple of other Sigma lenses to try, always finished up buying Nikon. Should have learnt by now.
Ho hum, have to wait for a Nikon 14-24mm.
