Hi all

A friend of mine has offered to swap his Sigma 105mm f2.8 for my Sigma 10-20mm.

I mainly shoot weddings and portraits, and have been after something with abit more reach, I love primes and feel that its the way my kit bag will progress.

I wanted to ask, what are your opinions on this lens?
I am reading some reviews so far that it is very sharp, the bokeh is lovely. but the AF can be slow and hunt abit.

My current lenses are;
Sigma 30mm f1.4
Canon 50mm f1.4
and the 10-20mm

also I need to take it account that I may be upgrading to full frame in the next 3 months, so obviously the 105 can come with me but the 10-20 cannot.

So....to SWAP or NOT ?

Thanks!

The 105mm is a macro so it'll have two uses, as a macro lens, obviously :D and also as a general purpose quality longish lens :D The only issue is the sluggish focus but I assume that you can give it a good workout before you decide and see if you're happy or not.

Gotta agree, the AF is sloooooow, but its nice and sharp as it should be.

I think sometimes AF is a bit of an after thought as they assume you'll be using MF most of the time, it being a macro.

My 150mm f2.8 is the same, it's a lovely lens but the AF is by appointment only.

Thanks for the speedy replies everyone! :D

I'm checking to see now if it is the OS version, and as you all have said my only worry seems to be the AF. Guess I am just going to have to play with it and see exactly how bad it is, seeing as I like to shoot with a 'photo journalistic' approach this may be a problem!

Otherwise sell the 10-20 and stretch the budget for the 100 f2.8L ? or the 135?

How about the canon 100mm f/2? Cheap and similar to the 85 f/1.8 (which is popular and highly regarded) but gets discussed much less (you'll find it most often mentioned on lists of "forgotten gems" it seems).

If you want a portrait lens it has to be either 100/2 or better 135/2. Macro is macro. It is a different thing, and these two are terrible at it without quite a few extension tubes.
