Hello

I finally got round to getting myself a macro lens, was bought off ebay and was labelled faulty as it didnt auto focus.

Happy days i wouldnt use AF anyway for macro, Bargain :D

But it wont stop down either!!! And f2.8 @ 1:1 doesnt show you much lol.

Tried on a 40d and im getting "Error 01" on an old 300D im getting "Error 99" Ive read before that this is something older sigma's can do on more recent canon bodies. Has anyone heard anything about the earlier versions requiring re-chipped to bring them upto speed with newer bodies?

Neil,

It's very likely that older Sigma lenses will not work on the current EOS range without re-chipping. Sigma used to do this for free to avoid losing their market share but I've seen reports that they nolonger have the required parts for older lenses.

Silly question, but would an older Canon EOS lens suffer from the same problem?

Or is this a case of Sigma not getting their reverse engineering 100% correct?

If the latter, then caveat emptor when buying third party Canon lenses :suspect:

With the Nikon version mounted on a extension tube (contact less type) you use the aperture ring to change the aperture - could you do the same with the Cannon version ? as there is no electrical contact between lens & camera you would'nt get the error . :shrug:

...have been in touch with the Sigma and they've said as long as the serial number is 3001001 or above it will be ok, and if I need it rechipping then it will be £33.99...

My serial number is 2009414

Seems ok, just hoping they still do it as this post was dated 08/2006, will give Sigma a bell in the morning.

Supposedly any Sigma lens manufactured before the 10d was released may have problems on the more recent (10d->) canon bodies. Seemed like a good chance to take and if its works out ill have a 105 macro for £130 lol

@dogfishmagnet, unfortunately the EF versions dont have a manual aperature ring or it would be grand. Been using quite a few M42 lenses in the method you described with no probs.

No it doesn't; your S/N is less than 3001001 - unless it's a typo
 
Sorry that was quote was taken out fo context, it was a guy was considering buying a lens and sigma told him it would work on his 20d so long as the serial number was higher than 3001001.

Mine is 2009414 so it wont be compatible with the newer EOS bodies, as i found out :( lol
 
Tough luck mate - i would maybe question the seller and say you were not aware it could not be stopped down.
 
Was in touch with Sigma today they will upgrade it for £5 (to cover postage) if i can get hold of the original recipt, doubt it though!

Im happy enough to pay the £35 to have it converted, still cheap enough and they said they'll sort the AF too for that price if its a simple fix :)
