I have one of these, although it doesn't get much use these days. Other than landscape I have used it for the "odd" portrait, some car shots and a few fun shots.

The best Sigma lens I have ever used.

Thats just it I do`nt want to buy one and it`s just stuck in a cuboard I wanted to use it for other picture`s as well as landscapes

I would say that everybody should have one of these in their kit bag.

Or their cupboard

Got a Canon 10-22mm now, guess where that spends most of its time?

Wrong its in my spare bag, ok that's in the cupboard, but at least its a different one

:D I guess what I'm getting at is that there are times when something that wide is really useful. Twice I have been somewhere and wanted to use it, and didn't have it with me; so now unless I'm shooting something specific, it goes in the bag.

for a very long time my Tamron 10-24 was my most used lens, then I was loaned a Sigma 10-22 f4-5.6 then bit the bullet and bought the f3.5 constant. Its amazing how often you can do with a few extra mm wider - not just landscapes, museums, interiors, even the zoo if you can get close enough to one of the more tame animals like the giraffes. You can also do some crazy stuff, for example a golf ball on a tee and a golfer mid swing with everything in shot.

Ultra wides rule :)

You can use any lens to take any picture- the only limit is your own creativity- subject to the photo working of course e.g. shooting a Robin 100m away at 10mm is probably asking a bit much:lol:

Anway, as has been pointed out, we all often buy lenses, use them a lot, the novelty wears off and they then don't see the camera very often. But, when you need them it's handy to have them. The key is, are you comfortable with your cash tied up?- I've a 300mm f2.8 which doesn't do much these days and a 50mm f1.4 which also gathers dust (figuratively people:D). At the moment I don't need to sell so am happy enough (maybe not entirely with the 300) to know I have them should the need arise.

Regards recommending lenses- kind of hard without knowing what you have, what you want to shoot and what your budget is? One lens I think everyone should own is the OEM MkII 70-200's- simply stunning and worth a diet of bread and milk:lol:

IMVHO a wide angle lens is one of the most creative lenses you can buy.

You can use it for the most obvious use... getting a lot in the frame... or you can use it a little more creatively by getting really close and / or creating interesting angles and perspectives. As the range is possibly something like 10-20mm which would be something like 16-32mm on APS-C at the longest end you can also use it as a "standard" lens. If you want to you can even reverse fit a wide to give you macro options.

It is possibly the most flexible and creative lens you can have IMVHO.

Whoever said that everyome should have one... I agree.

or ...getting up real close................

I do think that getting it all in the frame is pretty much the most obvious use for a wide angle. Ken may disagree with me and I can live with that.

Would I see a big difference between the old f4-5.6 and the new f3.5 constant lens

Yes about £120

I recently got the f4-5.6 and have done very little landscape with it but I have used it at car shows, museums, done interiors I recenty did a show flat for a friend and a couple of refurbishment buildings for a surveyor, dog show, photos of my kids and a few panning shot as well. Well worth the £120 less than the 3.5 in IMO

Buy the old 4-5.6. Its sharper and cheaper.

The Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6 is still one of my favourite "fun" lenses, it's the only thing that lets you do stuff like this :-

and it's even good for motorsport (the car nearly hit me ;) )

Again thanks for that think it`ll be the f4-5.6 can spend the £120 I save towards another lens
Mrgrubby great wide shots really like number 1

When I want to take serious shots I stick with a 17-50
When I want to have some fun, on comes the sigma 10-20 :)

I don't use it much for landscapes but it's a very creative lens.

Likewise, although I'd look into the 8-16 as well, I mean if you go wide you may as well go wide :D You can easily crop in, but can't crop out....

Ahhhh the old canon vs old sigma vs new sigma chestnut.

Which is better? Answer - none of them. My Sigma f3.5 is sharper in the corners then a canon 10-22 I looked at, but both were sharper then the f4-5.6 I had. At the same time the first f3.5 I looked at was soft, and a used Canon wasn't much better.

I would wholeheartedly check the lens you are going to buy even if you pay a few quid extra to buy one you can test in a shop rather then mail order. Ultrawides seem to vary a lot for some reason. The Canon is the fastest and quietest to focus.

You pays yous money and all that.
