Thoughts?

I see it's 0% interest on Jessops so I'm tempted :)

Currently I have:

50 1.8 prime,
55-250mm IS
18-55mm IS

So I'm on the lookout for a decent Wide angle !

I think the Tokina 11-16 is a slightly better option if you can stretch your budget a little more.

The Siggy is a good lens, it's seen many people off in the wide world, I had one for 3 years but the 11-16's IQ is much beeter imho.

I don't have the 3.5 I've got the 4-5.6 and love it, used for all my Light-Painting shots. I hardly take it off camera except for portraits/people. If I had the extra dish I might have gone for the Tokina though, seems they get great reviews.

Here's an example or two:

I've been watching your thread like a ninja as I'm so impressed with the photos :)

Hmm decisions, Tokina or Sigma! Are there any other wide angles without the same price/quality range?

The only other two uwa I know of/considered was Tamrons 10-24 and the Canon 10-22. Canon was coming out as best quality but at top price, tamron was lowest quality and lowest price, the 2 sigmas and tokina in the middle, so I went for the cheapest of the 3. Got my minted copy for £275 on here and have no regrets.

I would advise just dig and dig for reviews and if possible get a hold of one to try out in a shop.

Yep I think I'll be going in tomorrow and I'll try both Sigma's and the Tokina :)

Hi

I've the Sigma 10-20mm (not F3.5) and am very happy with it and would certainly recommend one ...

You are correct in trying out the lenses yourself ...

Good luck

Yep I think I'll be going in tomorrow and I'll try both Sigma's and the Tokina :)

I used to have the Sigma (albeit the variable aperture older version) but was never over the moon with it, it never seemed particularly sharp. I replaced it with the Tokina 11-16 and the difference was just huge. Sharp, lovely contrast and built to survive a nuclear winter.

Maybe the new Sigma is better though...

Due to budget and availability I went for the Tamron 10-20 , its OK but I would have liked a Tokina , but finance director refused the extra £200 :'(

Alot of what I'v heard is the opposite, that is the new Sigma isnt as good as the old. If you want a large appature and UWA the Tokina really does seem like the best option to me.

I, too, had the older version Sigma 10-20mm. I noticed a funny effect on one of my images, and decided to go through other images as well. The images looked fine at the normal resolution displayed on the computer, but when viewed at 100% there were noticeable aberrations down the left side, like camera shake, but could not have been due to using a tripod.

When I researched this issue, I found numerous reports online about this problem with this lens. I had similar, but not as bad, issues with the Sigma 18-200mm with OS. Needless to say I have now changed to only Canon lenses.

I don't currently have a wide angle lens though, so it would be interesting to see what the Tokina and Tamron lenses have to offer.

Which is the older Sigma version, the 4-5.6 or is it the 3.5?

It certainly seems like the Tokina is the way to go, I too have seen that the "older" Sigma gets better reviews, but the Tokina still comes out on top of them all anyway.

I have the f3.5 Sigma and it's rarely off my 60D. I love it and can thoroughly recommend it.

It is normally featured in magazines where there is a comparison test involving all the other makes and it is usually chosen as "best on test".

Andy

That is good to know, I must say I can't really find anything negative about either apart from with the Sigma the "older" one is better.

My only concern with the Tokina is that 11-16mm is quite a bit less than 10-20mm, but I guess I'll find out how much difference they make when I go and try them out :)

I'm looking for a W/A zoom for my 40D, what about the Canon 10-22 ? Similar price to the Tokina; everything I'd read about the Canon suggested it was the one to go for until I read a review in the June issue of Digital camera magazine. I'm assuming they were unlucky & received a dodgy copy...

Buying a lens can be a real nightmare. There are so many reviews, so many forums and so many suggestions.

What I tend to do is read as many reviews as possible, particularly from those who actually own the lens you are interested in. Try and avoid comments made by brand lovers or those who have never used the lens. You will get a pretty good idea doing this.

Remember that there will be positives and negatives for most lenses.

The Canon 10-22 was in a multiple test recently in one of the mainstream magazines. It was not reviewed as favourably as the Sigma or Tokina.

At the end of the day it's your choice.

Andy

Tokina 11-16mm vs the Sigma 8-16mm. Tokina is sharper but has some CA (fixable in LR), but Sigma has wider angle and is cheaper build quality.
I've never found CA a problem on the Tokina. It is there in the corners if you pixel peep, but corrected with one click in LR.

It's flare you have to watch out for.

Went with the Tokina, arrives tomorrow :)

Overall this seems to be the best rated one particularly on Image Quality, Build Quality, Weight and of course being F/2.8.

Still waiting for delivery of the lens, to say I'm eager is an understatement :p

And it'll be a looooong wait.

Why does it always seem to be your last on the route when your waiting for something like this lol

Received it, forgot to update the thread :D

I'll never be ordering from Jessops again, purely down to Yodel as a delivery company.

I read up on the horror stories (there were thousands), and much to my amazement they didn't let me down. 2 cars on the drive, the guy delivering the parcel rings the door and literally runs back to the van, I was 2 secs from the door and by the time I managed to open it he was already in his van!

Good job I was in, if it was just left on the door mat and nobody was in that could be one expensive loss.

In terms of the lens itself, the build quality of it is fantastic, I'm really impressed by it. It's lovely and wide, I just need to get some pictures done now :)

Dont forget you cant use filter with the 8-16mm Sigma, but it is supposed to be an awesome lens.

I had this issue and went for the older 4-5.6 10-20 sigma and i couldnt be happier. :)

Great stuff. Enjoy!

I'm looking for the older version of this lens (4-5.6). Anyone give me an idea of what I should be looking to pay for a second hand one? Or what they typically sell for on here?

I've seen them listed from £260-£280, maybe a bit less depending on condition. I was looking for one a couple of months back but ended buying new for £319.

Cheers Terry :)

I've put in a take it or leave it bid elsewhere for £245 so just wanted to check. Where did you get yours from and are you happy with it? Mine will be going on a D5000.

Yep, but have only used it for my New York holiday, some pics posted here. Its a bit strange using a UWA lens for the first time as it's so wide

Got mine from DigitalRev.

I got a mint copy on here a couple of weeks ago for £205. It's very rare they are that cheap though. Around £250 seems normal

Wow, nice work on getting that price!
