Aaaggghhhh! I can't make my mind up! I want the 17-55 because of it's f2.8 capability and sharpness but I also want something very wide for landscape/arty farty stuff to get into. I may well end up getting the 17-55 but so that might leave which out of the Sigma 10-20 and Nikon 12-24 to get?

Before I looked at the Nikon site, I was thinking of getting the Nikon 12-24mm f2.8 but it doesn't exist lol! I mistook it for the 14-24mm f2.8!

Can I throw the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 in as a suggestion too? Nikon-like build quality at a Sigma-like price....

No b****r off.

To be honest I'm reluctant to even consider Sigma because I know Nikon are always consistent with quality. I'm sure there are plenty of good 10-20s out there but need evidence. :)

I've got the Sigma 10-20mm but not had chance to use it for a proper shot yet. Test images are nice and sharp though, I've got no problems with it so far. I'll have to get out and find some wide-angle opportunities to give it a proper test.

won't it depend on budget?

the sigma 10-20 is cheaper and from what i have read here, is good for the price.
once i sort myself out with a camera, one of these will be on the list.

He didn't say Sigma he said Tokina.
The 11-16 is supposed to be a cracker of a lens better than the Nikon equivalent.

I'd certainly look at the Tokina 11-16 - the 17-55 starts when the 11-16 leaves off.

I would opt for the 17-55 2.8 I have the sugma 10-20 and find myself often at the 17mm mark taking shots rather than down at 10mm. That said, I only just used my sigma 10-20 the other day and hasn't been out the bag for a while as I am happy with the Nikkor 18-70 that I use, so the 17mm should be plenty wide enough for landscapes. Just my view anyhow.

The Tokina 11-16 is better resolution than the other ones you've mentioned and is built exceptionally well! Seriously check out the reviews!

It's not as good for CAs as others but CAs are trivial to fix in software!

I have it and I love it.

I have had all the lenses mentioned. The Sigma was soft (my copy anyway), the nikon 12-24 had great build quality, really sharp but some distortion at the edges along with some CA. The Tokina is on a par with the Nikon, build quality wise and image wise. Slightly less distortion and CA too.

i had the 10-20 siggy and thought it had to much distortion at 10mm

sld that on and am awaiting my nikon 12-24 arriving in the coming week

i will update my preferences once it arives and i test it

A comparison topic would be handy, if we could all post shots taken with the different wide-angle lenses in one topic then members could use it to compare them all when making a decision. After all, images speak louder than words! :D

I could provide shots from the Tamron 11-18, Nikkor 12-24, Tokina 12-24 and Sigma 10-20.....

Although the best wide angle by miles is the Nikkor 14-24 f/2.8 (although I no longer have mine as I like my C-Pols and ND's too much)
