Sigma 10-20..a good copy at last

Took my 3rd copy of the Sigma 10-20 down to Snowdonia yesterday for a bit of a hike & I'm pleased to say it's a good copy...

It will take a little getting used too as foreground detail becomes even more important to maintain perspective when the field of view is so enormous...never realised before just how much more landscape it would capture, I've also noticed in PP that it takes more sharpening than my Sigma 17-70, probably around 50%

Number 3 is great, The foreground really works for me, Nice shots, itching to get a 10-20!

I too had a bad 10-20 but gave up at the first hurdle and swapped it for a Canon 10-22. The Sigma is a great lens if you get a good one mind.
 
Would you (or any 10-20 owner for that matter) focus automatically at infinity and report back what the focusing ring 'thinks' you're focusing at?

Even focusing on stuff billions of miles away the ring tells me I'm focusing at about 1 meter :lol:

I'm not too worried as I *think* it's sharp throughout. problem is I don't really have much of a comparison as the archive thread contain pictures post processed to high hell :(

Just tried a quick test & 1m seems to be the same with mine...

To be honest my first try-out with the lens suggests to me I need to be very close to foreground elements & am going to give Hyperfocal Distance focusing a try on my next trip out...as I mentioned early I also find that the 10-20 images whilst sharp straight from the camera seem to take a fair bit of sharpening in PP, perhaps 50% more than my Sigma 17-70

I wouldnt have a clue if my Sigma 10-20mm is good or bad. I bought it, and I use it! :D

You must have a good copy Janice, if you had one like my previous 2 copies believe me you'd know about it... a great "quick check" is to take a shot of a brick wall (using a tripod) & then do 100% zoom check on the PC - soon see if it's decentred as it will be significantly less sharp on one side of the frame

I've heard about this 'soft on one side' thing before and actually never bothered checking it (rarely use my 10-20 as it happens). Is it ok if you give a run down of the typical issue with this lens?

Tested my now 10-20 out yesterday and seems to be sharp from left to right, but will give it a very thorough test over the next week :thumbs:
