Ladies and gents,

Ihave the Sigma 10-20.

Short question is it worth the upgrade to the Nikon, or can it be classed as an upgrade.

Just read some spiel on good on Ken's Website and I'm still a bit confused?!

Anyone used both?

Cheers for any help in advance!

Regards

Paul

I'd go the the 3rd way - Tokina 12-24.

Ken's review is basically correct, he gets stick, but he did a good review here.

I had the sigma and now have the nikon. I'd go with two different lenses purely based on the fact that the sigma was wild fun whereas the nikon was nice wide, quality nikon lens. I have the 10.5 now to give me the fun of the sigma and to be honest i didn't use the 20 end of the sigma quite as much as the 10.. i like extremes :)

Yes he did chuck the Tokina in there!

Can I ask have you used each of the Lenses?

Yes I have.

Had a Tokina 12-24 for ages. Had a Sigma 10-20 for a while which I bought to cover my Tokina 12-24 when it was sent to fix some de-centering.

Had a Nikkor 12-24 twice, first in 2006 (didn't float my boat, it feels like a cheap kits lens, not a £650 lens), replaced it with the Tokina 12-24 and pocketed nearly £400 from the move - and again more recently - using it on my D700 as it works in full frame.

I like the Nikkor, but its poor value, kit lens build quality and no better than the Tokina IMHO.

Hi there,

I don't want two Lenses that do a similar job. The Price of the Nikon is prhibative but there are a few 2nd hand I've seen for decent prices and the outlay is fairly small once I've sold my 10 -20 which i need to do to part finance this purchase.

Cheers for that, very helpful!

I'm going to re read Ken and see if I can make a decision

I take it you're saying the Tokina has it over the Sigma also?

The Nikkor 12-24 is a bit like marmite, you either love it, or you hate it, personally I think the Nikkor shades it, but you would need to look close to see any real difference.

Straight choice Nikkor or Tokina.

Well re read Ken he likes the Nikon if you have the cash!

Solution find a good used copy and hopefully get a decent lens for a good price.

I will have a look at this Tokina too though - seems a shame to rule that out!

Looks like bye bye Sigma! :)

The Tokina is on my shopping list, I really like their stuff - built like a Nikon, but priced like a Sigma

I bloody well knew it - a new contender has entered the fold - bought Digital Photographer Magazine today which contained a very good review of the Tamron AF 10-24mm DiII.

Also on DP here http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/tamron_10-24_3p5-5p6_n15/

Also in the back of mind Puddleduck's (who seems to have used and abused all lenses going) comments!

The Nikon seems to go for about £420-£440 on the bay which I guess makes it better value than buying it at it's rrp.

Looks like more research is required! :naughty:

With the price hikes on Tokina and Sigma, a used Nikkor 12-24 is looking like better value at moment.

I've no complaints about the Nikkor 12-24 optically - its just poor value at its new price. Its not worth £650, when a £300 Tokina is just as good.

If you hold a Tokina 12-24 and a Nikkor 12-24 in both hands, you'll know what I mean - the Tokina looks like a high end Pro lens, the Nikkor more like a throw away kit lens.

Well Andy your judgement is good enough for me! Just been looking at your flickr what lens did you use to use for those fantastic Lanscape shots?

Almost everything in there was shot with a Tokina 12-24 and Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 for the DX shots, a sprinkling of Nikkor 12-24 in 2006.

More recent ones when I went Full Frame were with a Nikkor 17-35 f/2.8 AF-S and Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 Di

I usually use a wide, and a medium telephoto, I don't really go for extreme wide angle for landscape, so I'm often not much wider than 17mm.

Cheers Andy,

Finally made the decision to go with the Nikon - found what looks like a minter for £465 (incl a filter and a Cokin Set!)

Cheers for your help - Now to sell the Sigma

I have the sigma 12-24 and would'nt trade it, nice lens.
