sick days

The hand gel sanitizers will kill bacteria, but they are of absolutely no use against virus's such as 'flu, common cold etc. There are some anti-viral ones out there, but they're more expensive. I'm lucky, I get supplies directly from B Braun through my work (quick grovelling phone call to Germany and hey presto!) and I do use them alot, year round.

I did have 11 weeks off sick earlier on this year, although, I find that having a nervous breakdown is a reasonable excuse for such absence.

not so - alcohol based hand gels kill bacteria and viruses in equal measure (as does good old carbolic soap , but thats less convenient to carry arround with you) in fact virusses are generally less robust against hostile environments than some bacteria - the anti viral sanitisers are generally a con playing on the public fear of swine/avian flu and while there are effective they are not generally worth thier retail price.

Pete the over the counter gels do not contain a high enough concentration of alcohol to kill complex viruses. Only when you get up to the efficacy of products like Softalind (and not all of those even), do they start to be of use against viruses.

The boots hand sanitizer sitting on my desk contains 62% alcohol - this exceeds the 60% required to kill viruses.

(It has in the past also led to teenagers and homeless people trying to drink hand sanitizer  to get drunk - rather them than me , but that does illustrate the alcohol content)

Is why many hospitals have removed them, they were being drunk dry! :gag:

Pete, does it contain benzalkonium chloride?
