Hi again i have a question about adjusting the shutter speed on my camera.

I have noticed that i can only set my shutter speed to 200 when i pop my flash up but when its closed the worlds my oyster.

Have i touched a setting here that has done this as i cant seem to find anything in the manual about this.

I should mention i am indoors at the moment.

I would look in your manual for the term "sync speed". Not sure what it is for your body but 1/200 to 1/250 is around the norm.

Don't worry, you haven't pressed anything wrong.

Assuming your set to manual mode 1/200 is the fastest shutter speed allowed when using the built in flash.

My D80 is the same cos I just tried it;)

Although there is nothing in the Flash section of the instructions look in the Appendix section at the back... This is where mine shows shutter speeds available when using the built in flash.

Hope this helps

Incidentally, I have just tried it with my main flash mounted on the HotShoe and it does the same thing.

I may be repeating info here, Stampie is right it is called Sync Speed.

It is the speed at which the second shutter( I think) moves as the flash fires

Nikon have moved the sync speed on the D50 its is 1/500

Ok thanks folk i'll check this out.

When using the flash, set to Program, or Aperture Priority - normal flash sync is 1/60, maximum depends on camera model 1/200 - 1/250, used to be 1/500 on the older models.

The thing is even at 1/60 that will freeze motion with the flash.
