...well today, I thought that I would have to start learning some of the more technical things with my camera. After all its what I bought my DSLR for, and I couldnt spend forever taking photo's in Point and Shoot mode!!
And I thought, Oh God...what have I let myself in for!! However, spending lots of time tweaking buttons, and twiddling knobs, I dont think I came out some some awful pictures, some have come out ok, and the rest I'm just uploading onto the computer. I'll see which ones I stick with!!

I dont feel so stupid anymore [I think] but what was the hardest thing for you to learn when learning your DSLR?

Thanks!!

Good luck, a bit of trial and error is all part of the fun!

I kind of decided to go straight in at the deep end, I haven`t used a program mode yet.

Not quite into full manual mode all the time though..!

I have done quite a bit of book reading though.

i see you got the 70-300mm sigma, how is it?

did you get the APO version or not

Well for me it was realising that it's a totally different beast to film camera in far more ways than I was expecting.

The great thing about learning with a digi camera is that you're so free to experiment, make mistakes and just learn by doing. It's the biggest leap forward the digi era has given us I reckon.

The trouble with photography is that things that could be quite simple end up sounding far too complicated.

I'm still learning and I have had the camera over a year!!

I think I just about understand aperture and depth of field ( I may live to regret saying that)....but I struggle with trying to "guess" what shutter speed to use, so I prefer to let the camera decide. I always fail miserably if I try fully manual.

What with trying to get the combination of aperture, shutter speed, dof, composition, focus, hyperfocal distance and lighting levels right.....oh and inspiration in the first place...it's a wonder I manage anything ;)

But it's fun trying....

This was taken today, with the Sigma 70-300mm lens.
It was my first time messing about with manual settings, and I was all thinking about the shutterspeeds and the Apetures, that I compltely forgot about my ISO!!!
Anyway...details are...
Taken in Locke Park, with Sigma 70-300mm lens, on Pentax K10D, Taken at 190mm ISO 1600 [I forgot to change it Ooops] F 8.0 1/175

I'll try harder next time!!! LOL

i try to take as many as possible in manual, next would AP, i seldom use auto. Its deliberate on my part. only way to learn keep using manual also use local park, yip swans, squirrels etc to gain more experience.

Not a bad shot at all! I've seen worse from people with much more experience.

Hardest thing about learning to use a dslr?

When to put it away and pay some attention to my long suffering g/f instead! It's seriously addictive!

i need to learn this too.
