I have had a D5100 for almost a year now. Loved the camerea, takes awesome pictures. Recently I have been having a problem with the camerea. When I take a picture, I take the picture but before I finish the picture in side does a side shuffle. (It jumps) sometimes causing a picture to be blurred. I let someone barrow my camerea to take pictures and then this started happening. It seems a setting was messed with but I can't figure it out.

Hi Margaret and welcome to TP.
I'm going to move this into the Talk Basics section for you where I think you'll get some more help.

It sounds to me like you're probably describing a slow shutter speed. Hopefully somebody who has used a D5100 will be along soon to tell you where to look at your settings on the camera and how to work out what mode you're in.
It may also be helpful if you could post or link to one of the photos - there's a fair bit on settings that we can pick up from the EXIF data to work out what's going on.

Never ever, ever, ever let someone borrow your camera. Almost certainly some of the settings have been altered, as a quick fix set it back to default (factory) settings and hopefully this will fix the problem

The only thing I know of that makes the image jump and can cause unsharp images is VR. Does your lens have VR? Is it turned on?

I would check whether it is in AF-S mode or not.It can happen if it is in AF-C mode, when you take a photograph a still object .Next is shutter speed and VR to check as mentioned above. If nothing works, rest it to default mode as suggested.

Likewise, don't know the camera - but try sticking it into Full-Auto / Green mode and see if it still happens.

Make sure its not on "quiet" shutter mode. I have done this myself. :) welcome to TP.

I don't think you have that mode on a D5100.

What the OP describes though as a side shuffle or something jumping before the picture ending doesnt add up though, to me this doesnt suggest slow shutter.

I have a D5100.

On quiet mode the mirror moves first and then the shutter is released to take the shot - kind of a two stage action with a delay in between.

I had this once, by accident when I was new to the camera. To me it felt as the op describes, also - due to the delay (and thinking the mirror moving was the shutter) I found I had blurred shots because I had moved too soon (before the shutter actually triggered). I thought the camera was broken!

I wouldn't give "advice" if it was just a guess.
