Morning people. Wonder if there’s someone out there in TP land who can help me solve a frustrating problem with the shutter release that’s appeared on my D5100.
When I press the shutter button to take a shot I can hear and feel the mirror lift but there’s a delay of around 2 seconds before the shutter opens and closes to expose the shot . I’ve not made any changes on the camera settings. The problem is on every shot regardless of light quality, lens or camera modes and is very annoying. I tried to shoot a football match the other day and the scene that I wanted to shoot wasn’t the one that I got, lots of players looking around and not a ball in sight.
I’m sure that there’s an easy explanation to this but I can’t work it out! Any help would be really appreciated.
Regards
NN

In self timer mode by mistake?

Sell it and buy a Canon!

Joking aside, have you tried setting the camera back to its default setting in-case something was altered by accident?

It sounds like shutter delay mode is switched on. It's designed to minimise camera shake when using a tripod. It's in the shooting menu.

I have my D7000 set up to do this but only when I'm on the wireless remote release setting (which is what I use when the camera is on a tripod). Sounds like yours has had that applied to the shutter button too. Haven't got the camera with me at the moment but I seem to remember its in the custom settings in the shooting menu.

Have you got it in live view when it does this??

Self timer cancels itself after one shot.

And remote release delay won't work with the shutter press.

(Both the above on mine anyway)

:plusone:

Bet that's the answer

Maybe check that the Fn button isn't configured to set this

Fixed !!!!
Well done Guys, and thank you all for responding
The winning respondents were Gad-Westy,Bristolian and Tunbridge. Somehow the shutter delay setting was activated - must have been me but for the life of me I can't remember changing it.
The degree of knowledge, wisdom and help from this forum is staggering, all I've got to do now is go and find the balls that dissapeared from the game!
regards and thanks
NN.

There's also Quiet Mode on the D5100 which could be it, I don't remember seeing one called "Shutter Delay" or similar, but then again I don't often shoot from a tripod.

Oops... OP replied as I replied :)

Sorry chaps - when I set mine to the 2 second shutter delay / self timer, it makes a rapid beeping after pressing the shutter before taking the shot 2 seconds later. But then reverts back to the previous shooting mode.

Surely you couldn't shoot all day with the beeping and not realise? And why do yours not cancel the self timer after one shot?

No, that's not the shutter delay your setting it's the self timer  - they're two different things

With the shutter delay you get a clunk of the mirror going up as soon as you press the shutter release and then 2 seconds later the shutter actually opens.

Ahhhh - ok. Thanks steve.

Exposure delay it seems to be called.

d4 in custom menu.
