I recently fulfilled a long term wish by getting a Hasselblad. It's a 1970s thing of chrome beauty and I'm loving it.

But it has the noisiest shutter I have ever heard. It's like a huge walloping sound.

I can't imagine anyone has been sad enough to measure different camera shutters, but if they had what other cameras would be up there with my Hasselblad as the noisiest about?

One of the MF Pentaxes (Pentaces?) had a recoil like a shotgun! Made a Hassy sound like a well loobed Leica. Mirror lock up was a must to avoid camera shake.

The RB67 sounds like someone dropping a bag of spanners. I used to have a Bronica ETRS which had the most godawful snap sound for a shutter, was pretty damn loud too

I just bought a H5D-40, and the shutter on that is incredibly loud. It's a lovely sound though. Like a samurai sword slicing through a zombie's torso.

Most of that noise isn't the shutter, it's the mirror </pedant >

Was it the RB67 you had with you in the NWales dawn meet last year?

Are you sure about that? Not challenging you, as I don't know myself, but there appears to be two distinct sounds when I fire mine. You hear the *click* of the mirror drawing up, and then a sucking, swishing sound in the lens, and then finally another click as the mirror goes back down.

Edit: Wait, I just realised that means it's mostly the mirror haha.

Very nice it was too, and I remember the noise it made.

I suspect it's still reverberating around the hills somewhere

hehe.... I wrote noise of the 'shutter speed' originally and only noticed just before posting...that would have raised even more eyebrows :)

I just picked up a nikon FM, used to have one many years ago, first shot I nearly dropped it.. a hell of a racket and a recoil like an AR15!!

We're spoiled with modern digital camera's, no recoil and near silent shutters in comparison.

This is going to be dominated with film responses...

The old focal plane shuttered Bronicas (EC, S2 etc.) were supposedly notorious for the noise of their shutters.

For what it's worth, my 500C/M is loud but it's quite a dampened sound - like a soft wallop. The lack of auto return probably helps prevent it being even louder!

The old medium format leaf shutters sound gorgeous, but the mirror slap can sound like someone dropping a sheet of 3/4" plywood.

The Pentax 6x7 made a fair old noise, but must admit i dont miss the noise from shutters or mirrors, the quieter the better for me :)

I miss the shutter noise from my A77. SLT so no mirror slap. Lovely for weddings since it was nice and discrete.

My old Sony A200 was awful. The sound didn't sound nice at all, like the mirror was gonna break. I found it quite embarrassing and was actually one reason i got rid of it. To get a camera with a more solid sounding slap.

You changed cameras partly because you didn't like the sound of it? Now I have heard everything!

Trying to use an OM4Ti in a quiet room made an awful lot of heads turn!
