Shutter for flash

I have a canon 1d mk2 and a jessops flash and my question is what is the general rule of thumb for flash photography regarding shutter speed, i`ve always thouhgt 125th but recently i tried to get a better depth of field when taking some macro shots and under exposed the shot mainly setting my app to f8, many thanks Harvey

Basically, when using the flash indoors the only function of the shutter is to be fully open when the flash is fired, so 1/125th is generally a good setting.

If using the flash outdoors or with VERY bright lighting indoors, then the shutter speed can make a difference, because the slower the shutter speed, the greater the effect of any ambient lighting.

Just remember the rule on this - the aperture controls the effect of the flash AND the ambient light, the shutter speed controls the effect ONLY of the ambient light.

Therefore, if you changed the shutter speed and the shot was underexposed, it had nothing to do with the shutter speed.
