hi guys, i recently got my camera gear stolen and am currently looking to replace. im on my way to look at 5 canon 1dmk3's tomorrow but the shop said they cant check how many shutter activations they've had. is there a program i can use to find this out. ive looked online and can find loads for nikon but non for canon.

any help would be muchly appreciated.

If they take them to their local Canon service centre they will do it while you wait for a small fee, if you pre book.

As far as I know there is no freeby software availabe to check this yourself.

There is a program called Exiftool written by Phil Harvey that works on the 1D and 1Dds cameras.

http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/

You unzip it and drag and drop a photo taken by the camera onto the file and it produces a DOS box with all the information in including the shutter count.

I used it on my S/H 1Ds3 and it read 5800, I later spoke to Canon regarding any work that had been done on it and they verified that the count last August was 3600 which seems about reasonable.

She also said they replaced the shutter under warranty at that count!!!! It seems I have a 1Ds3 with only 2.2k shutter actuations.

I suggest you take a memory card with you when you go to view the cameras and take a shot with each, you can then drag and drop the pic onto the file and it will tell you the shutter count. I guess you could take the program into the shop on your laptop/netbook and look at it there and then.

Enjoy your new camera.

Just tried this program and every pic comes out as a shutter count of 9825 yet i know my cameras count is around 16K clicks

I think there are some provisos with all these counters that rely on EXIF data that are mentioned somewhere.

I have read that if you copy the settings from one D series camera to another that will affect the reading also. The only other way is to speak to Canon, they seemed happy enough to give me the information they had on a particular camera's serial number if they had it recorded.

It is only Canon who can read the actual shuuter count generated in the camera using their own sofware. The EXIF count is better than nothing!

It did seem to accurately reflect my shutter count.

The only people who can do this for you is canon, if you are buying from a shop you will get a warranty, look for the cleanest with the least wear around the shutter button on the edges.
