Can anyone tell me how accurate shutter counters are Ive just done mine (40d) and was suprised that it was only 1288as I bought the camera used with the seller stating it had less than 2000clicks I expected to be close to 2500I used astrojargon to get my reading Thanks for any advice

I'm wondering how acurate EOSinfo is myself

I've just sold a 450D which I thought I'd taken no more than around 500 shots and it reported that it had actually had 1580 actuations, which kinda shocked me  However, saying this I bought a 40D and the guy I bought it from said it had only 328 actuations and this was indeed confirmed correct by EOSinfo which would suggest it must be pretty acurate

CruisingComet - If you use mirror lock I believe that counts as an actuations aswell not 100% sure on that though.

Well I suppose 1288 IS lower than 2000, so he was spot on, what a bonus for you !

The shutter count utility from Astrojargon, as stated on his website, counts shots taken NOT shutter actuations. It cannot distinguish between the two. This is due to a limitation of the Canon Firmware, not the util.

So say you had the camera from BRAND NEW and took 1000 shots normally and used the Canon "Live View" capture program in Canons "EOS Utililty" program where you get a live view of your Cameras sensor from your PC and snap away 200 shots, The shutter count utility will show 1200 instead of the 1000 you would expect. This is a limitation in the EOS DSLR Firmware that HAS been fixed in the 7D, but the Shutter Count UTIL is no longer compatible with Version 21 of the Canon Solutions software ! I am working a new version shutter count util for the 7D myself.

my 400d, ive never used it without a card in it, continous numbering of my photos and im only on 1,940 shots, using canons software it tells me ive got 3,128 actuations - thats a big difference! doesnt make much difference but i've been trying to sell it with less than 2000 actuations!

I'm a muppet :-D just realised the counter on the software is actually counting down my shots remaining in the batteries!! doh!

Which canon software tells you the actuations? I've looked in EOSutility but couldn't see any figures for the shutter count?

yeah mate, i realised later what was happening on the software and its showing battery life/shots remaining doh!!!

I've just tried Astrojargon's EOSinfo on a 400D and it came back with a shutter count of 0. Oh well, at least it got the model, serial #, time and date right.

Opanda seems to be one of the most popular ones. It gives me a pretty accurate reading on my cameras anway!

Unless the seller also used EosInfo to obtain the count.

Does it really matter?
...unless you're thinking of selling it that is?
I mean, it works OK, right?

Is EOSinfo that inacurate then?

Have no reason to doubt it, going by the body it had barely been out of the box when I bought it, think I was very lucky :D

No it doesn't really matter to me at least, just nice to know as mine was sold with such a low shutter count, quite rare to find one with so few actuations I would have thought anyway.
