I've googled this, but there are so many options out there...

Which is the best bet for a reliable, EOS shutter count piece of software that won't be full of bugs.

Don't mind paying for it, so long as it works.

ETA - this is for a 600D.

I use Kuso exif viewer its free and gives the most data on a photo including shutter count on un edited photos
when downloaded just right click on a photo and it is in the drop down list

A lot of metadata viewers use ExifTool behind the scenes, which is pretty much the industry standard for this and is very reliable. You can use it directly from the command line or choose one of the many listed GUIs:

Or just upload an image to a site that uses the same code:
