Hi,

Can anyone help me!!!! This is driving me nuts...:cuckoo:

I have been trying to get a shutter count from my new 50d from Jessops. I bought the last one which happened to be the "Body Only" which was on display but I was assured it had not been used since all the demo ones have the kit lens to use on them, which obviously you need to demo - :thinking:

Anyway, I puts a card in the camera and fires a few test shots and I get a count of 8000+ ....:bang: - Before anyone says, yes I have had this card in another camera, but it was only a 256mb and so I've hardly used it having 4gb and 8 gb which I generally used - it certainly hasn't had 8000+ files on it cos I checked my 400d and it only has 7000+ total shutter count - :thinking:

Hmmm, I was dubious to say the least, but it was the last one and I've saved and waited for ages for it....:thumbs:

Anyway, I have tried loads of things:-

Can someone please point me in the right direction, or try and suggest another way to get this shuttter count so I can determine that I definitely haven't been stiffed by Jessops!!!!!!..... :notworthy:

Are you sure the exe file is in the eos utility? there are two folders and if you drill down far enough the program should work.
 
Thanks peeps for your quick replies.. Tried formatting the card and still the file numbering goes up, 8152, 8153.. etc It is set to Continuous..

Veracocha, I have tried the program from both the folders you mention - Thnx. I had missed the one further down.. but when running it from there it just doesn't work at all??

If it does turn out to be 8000 + shutter count, I'd be heading straight back to Jessops with it - I presume you didn't get any discount on the body :shrug:
 
Just take it back and let them explain their way out of it. No doubt they won't be able to and then they'll have to do something about it. It will save endless hassle for you and arguments here on how to find out the correct shutter count, or not.
 
Hmmm. MisterE that is exactly what I am inclined to do... BUT... and it is a big BUT I'd read that sometimes the card, if used in another camera will give a high, spurious number. Also, I have seen "Googled" where other forums it is mentioned that this can happen - spit out an odd number.. when using various cards, already used out of different cameras!!... and this model is particularly wierd for doing this also - Apparently..

It is also fairly heavily documented how difficult it is to get this Shutter Actuation confirmed.... Unless you send it direct to "Canon" ££££££s

My concern is I obviously need to know the facts and be absolutely confident I am right before I go in there and rant.

Hope you can see my point, don't want to look a right ****.. hence my endeavours to get it confirmed somehow with software.. Screenshot it and ram it under their noses.

I am fairly confident I have an 8000+ Actuation here and obviously I won't be best pleased if that is the case, and no I didn't get a discount - Price match "Yes".

Hoping someone can help, but failing that I will exploit there apparent 30 day no quibble warranty...

Only had it two days so it'd be hard for anyone ot rack up 8000+ actuations in that time.

Any camera remembers the last file number it saved. If you put a clean/blank/formatted card into the camera it will continue numbering files in the sequence it already has recorded.

If you put a card that already has one or more files on it then one of two things happens....

1) If the highest file number on the card is less than or equal to the last number the camera has recorded then the camera carries on with its own sequence;

2) If the highest file number on the card is greater than the last number recorded by the camera then the camera jumps ahead to continue numbering files based on the number on the card + 1. This is intentional and is intended to help avoid creating duplicate file names.

Whichever card you use (say that 256MB tiddler) it does not need to have had 8000 files written to it. It only needs to have had one file written to it, numbered in the 8,000 range. When you stuck that card into your new camera, if there was indeed a file still on it, the camera would have picked up the sequence from whatever was on the card.

There should be a way to reset the card numbering in the camera but you must then put a clean/empty/formatted card into the camera so that it carries on with its own sequence and not the sequence still on the card. See pages 80-81 of the manual.

I suspect you have simply been a victim of bad luck with your card management. I doubt very much that the camera has really had 8,000 odd actuations.
 
I know about the card thing - acquiring the image number from a card used in another camera. Had it happen to me. But it's a lot of messing about trying to certify the actual number of shots, should you actually be able to do it anyway. That's why I suggested taking it back. There's a very good chance they won't be able to explain their way out of it to your satisfaction, won't be able to come up with a program to show the true image count, and hopefully will take the easy route and do whatever you require of them. Just don't complicate things by telling them you've put in it a card from another camera without being certain that there were no existing pictures on it from another camera. They probably won't know about this phenomenon anyway, but don't feed them with anything to allow them to squirm their way out of it.

tdodd is 100% correct - numbers can be artificially raised from camera to card or card to camera so a card you use once can get a high file number, then be put into a brand new camera and be actuated once to give that file number +1
 
I'd take it back personally.
