 I'm jealous! Bet your going to be hanging around the postbox for the next week or so! :D

Its frightning... with a bit of luck get tuesday. have to wait until friday evening for 20/20 cricket and a real first outing.. got rugby and cricket over weekend so a good old test...

like a kid at crimbo :)

400mm f/2.8...?

That must be, one mighty hulk of see thru stuff......

Hope all goes well, I'd **** myself flashing 1600 quids across the Ebay interwebzz..

What a superb bit of kit! Well done and congrats.

am i the only one that would be a bit miffed to spend £1600 on a lens that need the lens hood holding on with selotape? :p

or is this well bellow average price for this lens?

I was watching this on eBay - not that I have the cash at the moment :shake: good price though - seemed a bit strange that the guy was selling so much kit (300 f2.8 as well)- maybe he's going to Nikon  - his website matches the ebay address so you should be ok unless the postman tries to push it through the mailbox - dont you love the post office???
:bat: :bat: :bat:

I hope you have a strong monopod..bag...back - just kidding - i'm sure you'll get some great shots with the glass.

And yes I would buy it if I had the money - taping the hood on is not a problem at this price

dunno what the average price is, but new they are around £5k so I don't suppose that this is a bad price at all!

Doing a bank transfer in morning and hopefully get lens tuesday... he has sold a lot of kit lately and feedback shows thousands of pounds of lens sold and recieved.

I went on his website... they are some of the most amazing ducks pictures and wildlife I have seen considering its just the same stuff you can go photograph tomorrow on a pond or canal.. inspires me to try it :)

his 3000mm non IS lens sold for 1500... I am amazed I got this for 1600.. i consider it an absoloute bargain... so long as the glass is sound I will sort the hood.. i doubted i could ever get a 400 2.8 L ... shows dreams can come true hehehe

I am used to using monopod only.. not hand held anything accept the 70-200 which incidently will start getting a lot of use now.. must have second body and lens with this :)

cant wait :)

Wow. If I'd seen that, I can tell you you wouldn't have got it for that price. We have lots of customers who want to hire a 4500/2.8, but we can't afford £5k for a new one and I suspect they wouldn't want to pay £250/week to hire one. But at these prices...!!

Want to sell?

Want to sell?

hehe..

To be honest with you I only just took delivery of the 300mm f2.8L and was so impressed I got the 400.. couldnt resist at the price.. I am used to sigma 120-300 2.8.

I am going to try out the 400 and keep hold of the 300.. then make a decision which one to keep or sell.. will come to you for a quick sale if its the 400 then :)

It's arrived... WHAT A BEAST!

First impression 1.. will be fantastic for cricket

First impression 2.. will be almost unusable for football .. Far heavier than I thought :( and football is what I do mostly. ok for premiership type footy but local its to heavy to lump about and be running about with it at end of game.. sigh.. oh well you dont know until you try eh :)

I am looking forward to cricket this weekend :)

Boy that's a good price for 400 2.8. but you better get off to the gym, it's a heavy beast.

I have a little truck :)

Plan now is to keep to end of cricket season and sell.. I ahve the canon 300 2.8L so am OK for footy :) I dont think I will lose out on the deal.. should get my money back so it's like a free loan for cricket season...

Plus it means I wont have to wonder and want anymore .. damm if it wasn't so heavy I would keep... or maybe if I was 20 yrs younger eh? :)

What a shame. Still at least you know now, and that is one heavy beast! :D

What a shame. Still at least you know now

Thats what I told the missus who is now completly convinced I am bonkers:) I wont be hankering after one now so can be contented with the 300...

but a 1dmkIII hmmm :)

There's a woman over on the bird forum who takes some stunning shots with a 400mm 2.8 - usually using converters too. You really do have to consider that lens a tripod job though. I reckon you should keep it and sell me the 300mm 2.8. ;)

jeez you got it bad eh

Mike.

Fixed ;)

So the 6Kg lens weighs - well 6Kg - they dont call them big guns for nothing.
If you do sell in say 6 months, please let me know, and make sure you post some photos for us to see please (of the lens and the subject)

looking at the original sale photos and the canon museum http://www.canon.com/camera-museum/ (well worth a visit if you have not been)it looks like you brought a mk1 is that right?
is the hood fixable?

i guess for cricket you will use a 1.4x extender for close ups - i guess with a 2x extender would make a good bird lens on a tripod (800mm f5.6)..it will be intresting to see how it performs with the extenders - i suspect very well

i had a look at the photos on the sellers website - there are some great wildlife shots there here is the link
http://www.tomaspauko.t83.net/

some amazing pics on his website.. i am using the lens for 20/20 friday and cricket over the weekend.. wont need extender.. did it last week with 300... will deffo be posting pics this weekend from it.

more problems arising anyways... gonna cost me 80 quid to add to insurance. thats not good..

taking lens hood into local camera shop who does bits and bats..its just the screw that keeps hood onto body thats broke.. should be able to fix OK :)

will make a decision after weekend exactly what gonna do.

Have you tried a quote for a new lens hood? I think it's around 300 quid for the 500mm f4L

Should be an easy fix as you say.

Well things took a turn for the worse today..

I took one of my 1ds' in for sensor clean... OK .. I took the lens hood off the 400 in to be fixed and the guy seemed confident he could sort (gotta pick up thur afternoon)

I took the newly aquired 300,, L lens in to see if he could clean inside as it was sold to me as regular serviced but has some "light dust as is normal for a lens that age."... hmm turns out its fungus and would cost 100-200 quid to ahve it cleaned and serviced..... aaargh :( left it would get worse and be useless in 12 mths.

The seller says they cant pay for the work but are more than happy to give me a complete refund...

sigh.

Bummer! :(

Is it the 300mm 2.8 non IS then? How old is it?

non IS yes. dunno age... camera shop says damp has got in. possible through switches.. i aint gonna lose out but its a shame... i could get it sorted and serviced myself .. as the lens cost me 1k it would then stand me at 1200 which is about the going rate anyways.. just wouldnt be as big a bargain... so the dilema.. send back for full refund or keep and sort.. hmmm

So the 400 is too big and the 300 has got mould? that sounds like a bit of bad luck there, if you reckon you wont lose that much on the 300 and your happy you got a good un, then id say get it fixed yourself

Considering the 300 is pretty much your ideal lens for what you do, I'd have to say bite the bullet and get it fixed, as long as you have an assurance that the lens will be OK when it's cleaned.

also if it is fine apart from the mould aleast you know it is agood one,

Seller has said 100% refund.. OR he will go halves with the cost of getting fungus sorted and a service and will pay for a 6mth warranty

Looks like thats the way to go..

I emailed sigma and asked them for an update on the 120-300 lens.. they said lens completed today and will be despatched tommorow... THATS STRANGE .... Lats month when it went in for a new AF motor i waited a couple of weeks then emailed them to see what was happening and I got the exact same response...bit of a coincidence eh?

Got hood fixed on the 400 easy peasy :)
