Show us yer film shots then!

Been a long time since I posted anything in here! Finally got round to sending some frames and rolls off to peak, and one that I wasn't so sure about at the time has turned out quite nicely :)

Portra 160

I spent last Autumn with E100 and all I did was stare at this stuff in the fridge thinking "Am I doing the right thing"?

Lovely image Jonathan.

By E100, do you mean Ektar? or the Kodak slide film? If the latter, I have been meaning to get myself a box of this, as I really want to see what it's like compared to provia 100F.

As for Portra 160, I really like it as a film. Its dynamic range is incredible, but I struggle to scan it well. Compared to slide film, I have to spend ages in post deshafting the colours that my scanner produces. Perhaps one day I'll get to fed up of it and attempt to create a colour profile for it. One day.

Many thanks in any case, I appreciate the comment :)

The Ektachrome. After spending the back end of last summer/autumn with it I had to wonder why? Why - in the modern age - would anyone shoot slide? I've tried Provia, Velvia, Crossbird and now Ektachrome. Whilst the transparencies look amazing and magical, I've yet to find anything that's as nice as when I shot Portra 160.

The feel that your image has is the same feel I get from the images I took with it. And it's something I've been unable to reproduce with any other colour film. You say you struggle to scan it well, but it looks pretty damn good to me. :)

I appreciate it, but I can only take credit for my ability to move sliders in LR to get the colours right... straight out of the scanner, it looks truly terrible!

See, I'm a total sucker for Velvia 50. Personally I'd shoot this where ever and when ever the dynamic range of the scene would allow :D

Kenilworth Castle with a little bit of cloudy drama at last!

My crappy shot of Kenilworth castle is boring compared to yours :( Might be thirty (or more) years ago when shot was taken.

I have a shameful anecdote about Kenilworth Castle, off topic I'm afraid. The first time I visited it was from my flat in Birmingham, when I was at university. Three friends and I shared two bedsits in a building on the corner of Edgbaston Road and Willows Road which led to Balsall Heath, opposite Cannon Hill Park, imagine being wealthy enough to afford a gaff round there now It's either a probation hostel or nursery now according to Google Maps. Never mind the background, we decided to visit Kenilworth one Saturday. The household had adopted a stray cat so we decided to take the cat along. On the way it vomited all over the back of my prized Riley RMA and, when we arrived, the consensus was that we should let the cat go in Kenilworth instead of taking it home. I'd like to think that the cat had a better life in Kenilworth than in a stinky damp flat in Edgbaston, even though we had lots of mice living in the couch. What can you expect when the rent was £2 a room/week?

Agfa Clack 6x9 Fomapan 200
The camera is like a Brownie 127 on steroids. The curved film plane helps and the meniscus lens has a glow to the way it renders the scene. Fomapan works really well when you don't have much control over exposure. And, most importantly, the numbers on the backing paper are really contrasty. I've spoilt more than one Ilford film trying to load a camera with a red window onto the backing paper. Seven out of eight potentail shots came out.

Nice, Brian, but definitely not Kenilworth! Those cars would be in the (ex-) moat!

Huh! But the colour of the castle seems right as most castles are grey? h'mm so where could it be south Wales? Any Welsh members?
Also IIRC we went to Warwick castle and just had an outside look at Kenilworth as it was near..a puzzle as you know Kenilworth well.

I think that is Raglan castle.

Have you kept any of the photos you took when they were building it, Brian? ;)
Bri drew up the plans :ROFLMAO:

Given Brian's username and the above comments, I can only assume that it must be Camelot ................. ;):exit:

Kenilworth Castle doesn't have fancy towers like those on the right in this shot.

This page http://www.castlewales.com/raglan.html seems to suggest to me that Richard is right... except for Raglan Castle being grey. So my guess is that Brian's shot was taken in strong golden hour light!

Kenilworth Castle is indeed sandstone, and only 5 miles or so from Warwick Castle, which is grey (presumably limestone?). The boundary between the two rock types runs between the two.

That's beautiful Jonathan, and inspires me to use the roll of 35mm Velvia 50 I've been sitting on for ages. How did you meter the scene? Was it metered seperately or with the F80s meter?

Many thanks Nige :) Oh yeah, definitely get it loaded, especially with spring coming as well :). Yes, I used the built in meter in the F80. I had no idea how it would behave in light like this, but it did ok. I set the camera to meter over the widest coverage of the view finder (not spot, or centre weighted, the other one. Was it called matrix metering back in the days of the F80? I don’t recall...) and metered with the center of the view finder where the end of the path is, with the camera in landscape orientation. I figured this way it would sample a good range of tones in the image, before shooting in portrait. I was essentially putting complete faith in the camera, as if never shot slide on it before and had no idea how it would come out.

Thanks Jonathan. How do you have the metering set up on your F80 if you don't mind me asking. I have mine set up for back-button focus, but wonderin if, for scenes such as yours, it might be better to use that button for exposure lock?
