Show us yer film shots then!

I found it quite difficult to scan and get the colours right for Kodachrome.
They just seemed to contain essence of Kodachrome and never quite attained the classic iconic look we see say in 5x4's at Shorpy..

...but when the scan comes out ok, you can get some Kodachrome goodness;-

I've tried on 3-4 films now, some shot by me years ago, a couple by a friend, and this set, and I'm just not getting it - the canon version of silverfast (SE version) hasn't got the profile for Kodachrome in it, so they all come out with a bit of a wierd colour balance. Getting the half a dozen shots I've posted here has left me with a headache the size of Jupiter from tweaking and faffing. I know the last two were still a bit crook, but maybe I'll sort 'em next rainy afternoon

I'm just happy to have had a couple of shots that weren't complete crepe out of my last chance with this film. In fairness, I'm happier shooting in Black and White on film, despite having 30-40 rolls of colour 135 tucked away in the fridge.

edit: had another go at the Jawbones and Staithes...

TBY,

I think that these two have a much better vibrancy and definition to the colour and in my opinion are much better than your first post.

Well I'm the same as you then as I've scanned 1000's of negs and pos by now and I've found some shots are unscannable in that I haven't enough skill to get the colours right compared to even a Boot's print :( ...one day I'll bother to learn in PS how to isolate and get the colours right for some part of the shot without effecting the colours in the rest of the pic.

Some I developed yesterday taken on Chinese Kodak Ektacolor print film (e Bay £12 for 20 rolls) with the C330. Didn't do any colour adjustment in PS, just cropping, resize and sharpening.

Thanks - it took far more working on in CS5 than I'm normally happy to do with film shots to get them something like. Normally, I try and keep any digital PP to a minimum when I'm working on film stuff, as I'm always worried that I'll get a good picture, at the expense of the "film-ness" of the shot - if that makes any sense at all.

I've now picked up on the half a dozen decent enough shots to have another attempt with, which will mean going back to starters - re-scanning with a few different tweaks until I find a setting that works, then work up the shots colour correcting as needed. A lot of work, but hey - it's the only last roll of Kodachrome I've got :)

Well a good argument "is it the end result that counts"? For me...we are up against digital cameras but do have some advantage in that we can keep the film look and also change the shot into the digital look.

The digital look from either old Kodachrome, Agfa or Perutz slide (can't be bothered to look):-

Some OOD Velvia 100F, I dont seem to be getting on with this very well, I'm temped to shoot some more Ektar, I like allot more of my print film shots. They seem to scan much better too.

Sean, I took me about 10 rolls of Velvia to figure out that it needs 1/3 stop over exposure for landscapes and 2/3 stop over exposure for skin tones, it you have to avoid the red-ish colour cast ( as per my Contax G1 meter).
The sky in your fist shot will need a Grad ND filter to capture.
Also you might wish to get the meter in your camera calibrated. They are often 1/3-1/2 stop off; which will produce the colour cast.
Provia is a much more forgiving film.

No idea on the scanning ability....

will try to remember to set the exposure comp minus about half stop when I get the film :p . haven't decided in which camera it will go :)

12quid for 20rolls :bonk:

nice shots ! :)
where did you dev and scanned them ?

Thanks - deved and scanned at home

Sorry, my bad - that's £12 for 10 rolls. The film's from Korea and takes about 10 days - 2 weeks to arrive. It's Portra sold as Ektacolor in the far east

Taken for the Architecture Film challenge

Canon A-1, FD 135mm f/2.8, Boots 200 slide film

Lovely compositions

I bought me a new G4050 HP scanner and trying out some things. So far I like it. I am using the software it came with instead of the view scan I had been using.
Aside from cropping, they are what they are.

Actually, I am glad you noticed the trash because it was one of the things I liked about this set if images. I shot the roll between two of the most high crime low budget parts of L.A. I find it ironic that in some of the dirtiest, high crime, gang infested parts of L.A., You will also find some of the most decent hard working people you will ever find any place in the world. In reality, most of L.A. is actually pretty cool, but it does have its crazy ghettos as well.

Missed the focus, but I like the capture.

Loving this, who decided on the matching traffic light and shopfront colour scheme? Pity about that bollard but touching nonetheless

Thanks folks :)

Thats fantastic Guy. How did you get the foreground and the sky so well exposed? Grad ND?

Yes, testing out my new Cromatek filters, wondering if I should cancel my Lee order. Needs a bit more testing first before I make my mind up. Bit of a colour cast on the slide (which was easily corrected in Photoshop) but am thinking it's the usual Velvia 100 low light colour cast.

Fantastic shot. I'd be interested to know what grad you used, was it a 2 stop hard edge by any chance?

Actually that was a 1 stop and the sky was a tad too light on the slide, I had to darken it a little more in Photoshop. I think 2 stop would have been perfect, but I left it at home by accident  I tried another shot with a 3 stop but it darkened the trees/bushes too much. I don't think there is a choice of hard or soft with the Cromatek. It's on the hard side, softer than my hi-tech hard but harder than my old Cokin soft ;)

Thanks for answering so quickly. The balance is absolutely perfect, I opened it up quickly in PhotoShop (FF and colour management don't mix for me) and it was perfect. The brightness of Canary Wharf Tower with the darker park in the foreground is fantastic and the sheen of the water on the path is something very special indeed.
