Thanks Paul :) I didn't say what films they were shot on at the time because Photoghost still had my films and I couldn't remember what I shot when :lol:

The Abbey Hill Rally ones are Ektar 100, the Volksfest ones are Portra 400, and the donkey sanctuary ones are Fuji Pro 400H :)

Had another two rolls scanned by Photoghost earlier in the week and I sorted them out last night. I think the colours are pretty similar, but I'll try and post them up today at some point.

@skysh4rk Oversharpened might be the wrong word actually, it's just that when viewed closely the clarity isn't what I'd expect from a high end scanner. They look like they've been processed too much. This is nothing against your photography, purely a scanning thing! :)

Nice! What do you think of the 160? I've only used the 400 so far and love it, but I really like shooting wide open which can be a PITA with a max shutter of 1/400 on a sunny day. Ordered some 160 yesterday but I'm not sure how different it'll look.

Have you tried ND filters? Another alternative is a polariser, that should bring your exposure down by 2-3 stops too.

Cheers! 160 is the only Portra I've used but I love it; the gentle, muted look and feel really work for a lot of what I want to do. It'll be interesting to see how you think 160 compares to 400! :)

I've thought about buying myself a 2 or 3 stop ND filter to use, but I'm not sure how much more difficult that would make focusing? Also then I'd have to read the light meter and remember to go down a couple stops when I input the settings, and I would definitely forget after the first couple times :lol:

Obviously it depends how bright it is when you're focusing but with slide filters such as Lee, Cokin and Hitech you can focus first, then fit the filter to the holder. Doing it that way could also act as a prompt to adjust your light meter reading.

I shoot both speeds and tbh i cant tell any différence between them but i guess it depends on wether you're looking at the image in general or purposely seacrhing for film characteristics such as grain.

The sad thing is that this mine is due to close in December and that will be it! No more coal mines in the UK, so all our coal will then be imported.

Yes, the last big deep mine.
Thoresby and Hatfield closed this month so that just leaves Kellingley. There might be the odd two man band pick and shovel mines in South Wales, but they only produce a pit tub a day.

Quite shocking when you think about how much coal there is under our feet. I'm sure I read something recently that said there was enough coal in the UK to provide us with electricity for three or four hundred years (may have that figure wrong, but it was a heck of a long time). And I thought energy security was a huge issue these days???

All about costs, isn't it. :(

@Martpix - have you thought about publishing a photo book when the last pit closes as a commemorative thing? You've produced some properly cracking images of an area many of us have never seen outside the odd news footage.

^^^WHS^^^ They deserve to be in print and as an exhibition.
 
My first time using Delta 100 :) Used FP4+ quite a lot but thought I'd shake it up and try something new. The results seem to have a lot more contrast which is good because I'm a sucker for a contrasty black and white. Have to order some more I think.

RB67 + 127mm. Delta 100 in Rodinal 1+50 for 14 minutes.

Nice one Carl. I really like the look of Delta 100 & 400. The Beatle and Chevvy a couple of images back in your Flickr stream almost pop out of the screen.

I've got something in the pipeline for an exhibition but no book planned as yet, perhaps something to think about for the future.
 
Delta is the bomb, its expensive but the results are top dollar.
Delta 100 is my thing, if I can't get that its acros, if I'm poor its FP4..:D
Delta 400 is quate nace too, and if you soup it in xtol its very very smooth for 400 speed film.
I printed a 12x16 lighthouse scape from a strip down the middle of a 6x6 neg, and it has grain but its sort of blurry, like unfocused grain, like if a "grain" was a brick, it'd had the corners knocked off it...or something..
anyway, you need a loupe to tell it from 100 speed film..:)

Which developer do you normally use for the 100? I read somewhere that HC110 works well, and it's what I normally use, so seems a good choice for me. I think I need to settle down and stop jumping around with different B&W films so much. Find a couple I really like and learn how to use them better. Veering towards the Deltas at the moment.

As with everything it depends what you want.

I don't want grain, but most of my film is 120, its not that easy to end up with obvious grain in delta 100 120 unless you cock up development.

With that in mind this is what I've settled on -

35mm I try to do in xtol no matter what, 120 will do in xtol if I have 5+ rolls to soup, if its just the odd 1 or 2, I do 1-100 rodinal for an hour.
I'd do everything in xtol but it has to be mixed, it doesn't keep that well and it just isn't as convenient for a few rolls as rodinal.
I would imagine HC110 would be pretty good on 100, 35 or 120, but it may produce some grain on 400, especially 35mm, I dunno I've only used it a couple of times and that was 120.
But it is a convenient one shot, waiting till you've got a pile of film to soup so you can mix up 5L of xtol is a pain sometimes.


I think rodinal is a developer you can get to know well if you don't mind a little grain sometimes, the variation on its use like dilute stand development adds a dimension that isn't available with some other developers, and it keeps so well..:)

Taken with a Leica M6, with a 35mm Summarit-M f/2.5 lens & a 50mm Elmar-M f/2.8 lens.

Kodak Ektar 100, Kodak Portra 160, and Fujifilm Acros 100. Some at box speed, some pushed.

Thank you :) I've not tried the 400, but when the weather gets a bit duller at the end of the year I'll definitely buy a few boxes to try :D
