I've spent what must be hours trawling through descriptions/reviews etc plus visiting shops to have a look at bags. I'll be carrying a 70d with 17-55 and hood in place. Would like space for a light jacket & water bottle. Possibly filters and spare battery. in the past I've had plenty of small camera "pouches" and a couple of backpack type bags. This time, I'm looking to go the shoulder/messenger bag style route. At present, my shortlist is a Think Tank Retrospective 10 and Tamrac Apache 6. One of the reasons for these bags & nothing smaller is that I could get the 70d & 17-55 in sideways if I wanted to. I've bought products from both companies before & been very happy. Just wondering if anyone with first hand experience of either bag has any thoughts which might help me with my decision. Also, I'd be really interested to know what it's really like walking around for a whole day with one of these shoulder style bags and around 2 kg of camera kit on board. Thanks in advance for any comments.

Lovely though it looks, the Think Tank seems unnecessarily heavy for an SLR with one lens at 1.4 kg.
I don't see the point in getting a bag with extra room for a jacket inside- unless there are two completely separate sections. So it starts raining and you take out your jacket and put it on. It then stops raining, but it's warm and you don't want to wear a waterproof all day. What are you going to do with that damp jacket, shove it back in the bag with your camera kit? Hell no. Similarly, no bottles of wet or sticky stuff inside with my camera kit thanks.
Smaller bag with mesh or strap to hold a jacket, and an outside expandable pocket to jam your drinks bottle in would be my two-penneth.

Thanks, Dan - very well made points. amazing how I overlooked wet gear inside the bag, probably thinking about my backpack where I have a completely separate compartment. I had noticed the weight of the bag but had convinced myself that this wouldn't be a problem to carry around all day. as you say, though, probably disproportionate to the the weight of the kit I'll be carrying. Is there a particular bag you'd suggest?

What about one of the Slingshot bags from Lowepro. Separate compartments for your camera and other stuff.

My needs for a shoulder bag were a little different from yours- not least because I didn't want to drop £100.
If you like those bags why not just look at the Apache 4 or the Retrospective 5 or 7?
Or like Neil, says the Lowepro bags are always well thought out- if not necessarily as stealthy.

I have 3 Lowepro bags including a Nova 2 AW- shoulder bag which was almost perfect until I got a 70-200 which wouldn't fit when attached to the body.
My current shoulder bag is a Sony LCS-MS10 -which I paid £28 for- modded with a great £6 Matin cushion pad. Weighs 600g, yet holds my 50D with 300mm f4 and 1.4x attached- plus a couple of batteries and a few nik naks.

Any thoughts towards a billingham, maybe one of the hadley series?
Camera gear in the removable insert, other stuff in front drop in pockets or rear zipped pocket. Would keep it all separate.
I've got too many bags (need a clear out tbh) but the Billingham I just got is a nicer bag than my lowepro, tamrac or kata bags.

Hi, If it's any help I used a "Tamrac Apache 6". For a very short time and although quite a nice versatile bag I found that something within the material of the bag & strap totally ruined parts of clothing that I had been wearing with black marks that just wouldn't wash or clean out. I took the bag back to the shop where I'd bought it and exchanged it for a "Benro Cool Walker 2" which is marginally cheaper and in my opinion a much, much better bag in every respect and very versatile and is well worth a look. It will easily hold the kit you are listing. It will slip over a luggage trolley if you want it to the same as the Tamrac. Also comes complete with a rain cover and removable insert and strap and is of excellent quality.

Hope this helps.,

George.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who took time & trouble to reply. Much appreciated. I think I'll go and have another look at the "Retrospective" range and see if the 7 is large enough for me. I have absolutely no experience of the "sling" type bags and am unsure whether it's what I'm really looking for. Thanks again.
