Should the rich pay more?

something else to consider is that richer people are probably living in bigger houses, which cost more, pay higher rates because of it, have bigger energy bills..drive bigger cars, spend more on fuel for them etc etc etc...so the outgoings are proportional to the income, and likewise the tax burden. its only a very small percent of people who dont pay what they should, asking the 'rich' to pay more is not the answer.

i genuinely do not think this thread can evolve without politics and religion being summoned as major factors.

i'm surprised the Widow's Offering has not been brought up yet; i'm not a religious person, but that parable was burned into my soul at an early age ... i think a lot of people could learn from it

never a lender or a borrower be, something like that.

politics only comes into it when the torys get the blame for making cuts and labour gets the blame for spending money the country didnt have. we can talk about tax burden without mentioning the above?

Take the cost of the bank bailout out of the equation and the deficit labour left wouldve been lower than that inherited from Major.

Do you have a reference for this? I've given it a Google and can't find anything to support it.

If you divided all the money in the UK equally between the population, after 1 year, some would be millionaires but most would be in debt.

if that's a reference to the Widowers Offering, then I'll let others more religious say it's nothing to d with it

okay, so this thread has not gone down the extreme routes I thought it might (EVERYONE can be a millionaire? we are ALL the masters of our own destiny? all benefit claimants are SCROUNGERS etc) but the majority of folk here, rich (in whatever sense they choose to define it) or not, want someone else to pay more than they do.

Hmmm.

That isn't my impression of how the thread has gone, mostly.

Okay, I thought it was going down a dodgy road, but it didn't. Sorry, carry on

Yeah, it's on a knife edge at times, but I think it's been mostly fairly sensible.

Good discussion.

Yup! You got it in one I reckon. Let us be honest here, somebody on say 150K is not sitting up worrying about the poor guy down the road on 12K a year and struggling. So nobody on a low income is really going to worry about high earners paying more tax.

I think the thread has been well behaved by all. It's been very interesting and well debated. Good work all

Go to bed Joe, I do not need your permission to behave myself :shake: ;)

Possibly so, but all the miliionaires would end up like this one ;)
