Should new brake discs warp?

3 week old discs needing skimming?

well my disc's did, I had the exact same problem on my van, the garage skimmed the disc's and everything was tip top after that,

Still, I wouldn't be happy having spent money on discs that then need to be skimmed. This suggests they are either manufactured out of tolerance or have warped early in their life.

Not something I would want on my motor!

No they don't, they sound like absolute amateurs!

They are guessing not testing and measuring, they are re-placing out of ignorance of the actual fault and charging for it all....Volvo are paying for nowt I mean.

What part of that is good?

Pat, find a better mechanic I say. ;)

It sounds like a place I would certainly not come back to. I incidentally had a lot of trouble with brakes last year, and dodgy garages. All solved by putting in OEM stuff the 3rd time round, and it did cost me :bat:

The discs need skimming and all will be sorted

yeah, until something really bad happens with these defective disks. It would be fine if these were older with very slight damage due to worn pads, but certainly not this case. I know what 3rd party non-OEM usually means - bin and extra expense.

Well, the saga continues....

The discs had apparently been delivered to the garage but due to things happening at work and the garage being booked up, I could't get the car in until today.

Turned up after a quick phone call to them and it appeared that the discs had been returned but due to the guy I was dealing with being away, no one kind of knew what was going on.

So they ordered some more to get the work done for me, me telling them not to order from the car reg because it has a caliper upgrade so requires different discs, the ones off the S60 R. They nodded, said it would be fine. Phone call at 3pm tells me that the wrong discs were delivered because, guess what, they'd ordered off the car reg!!

So the work didn't get done. The manager is calling me tomorrow to straighten things out. It will get sorted, if only because I paid for a job to be done in the first place, and only by changing the discs could we ascertain if there was an underlying issue. After all, the discs were replaced because they told me they were worn and warped

Those of you who are garage-savvy will do a massive 'facepalm' at the fact the garage is Kwik Fit. They've been brilliant with everything else - brakes, tyres, service & mot - but this is trying m patience because the vibration is ever so annoying on the drive to and from Redditch.

It's a shame I don't have the old mechanic I had in Daventry, as he was brilliant, close by, and knew everything about cars.

Pat I don't know which side of Rugby you are but check out my local garage they have been servicing the cars in our family for about the last 15 years and are brilliant...it's Frankton Lane Garage, Stretton-on-Dumsmore....okay it's not as convenient as the quick fit in Rugby but they are damn good

You can usually find loads of Volvo tech's in Daventy as their training college is on the royal oak industrial estate ;)

Yep been in there a few times :)

Fair play to them then, even if their procedures can't override their systems and order the right bits.

Thanks for the tip Matt. I'm in Hillmorton side.

The main reason I haven't used anyone in Rugby recently us because of working hours and not being able to work from home on recent projects.... Kwik Fit in Redditch is perfectly placed because its just a few mins from work.

You can usually find loads of Volvo tech's in Daventy as their training college is on the royal oak industrial estate ;)

My old mechanic, who was next door to the office when I worked in Daventry, had a Volvo tech on call to sort queries about my Volvo, and a Ford tech from the college when I had my Mondeo. For my SEAT Leon he knew someone who'd been to Benidorm ;)

I knew their would be a punch line at some point  :bonk:

Ha :)

It's just this one thing that's let them down. Kwik Fit in general gets a lot of stick and previous branches I've used when I've had to, have been not great. But the lads in Redditch are courteous, polite, offer competetive pricing and are quick.

Yeah but they are not mechanics Pat, they don't advertise as mechanics nor as a mechanical workshop.... gotta be some more smaller guys near work... any railway arches nearby, small surviving competitors are often very talented type optimism here. ;)

Really?

Looking on kwik fits website they advertise as being experts in automotive repair and their careers pages is advertising for service and brake technicians.

If they are talking the talk, they should be able to ride like John Wayne ;)
And that doesn't mean diagnosis by substitution.

There is one a similar distance away, but at the time they couldn't fit me in, hence why I went to KF. The only reason I'm still going to KF is they owe me a working set of brakes. Once it's done, i will go elsewhere.

Good plan.

Yeah its sure doesn't  ...I used to be a Audio Technician, meant I could solder speaker cables and install 13amp plugs. ;)

Even they describe themselves in the meta data under description of business as: Kwik Fit are the leading fast fit and automotive parts replacement specialists in the UK
No mention of mechanics nor mechanical workshop in any of the 'keyword' terms nor in the websites words and sales pitch.

To be honest I rate them for their honest advertising ...hats of to them for being straight up I say. :D

They don't need to advertise "mechanics" or mechanical workshops, they describe their staff as technicians.... Fitter would be a better and more honest description. A technician is someone who can diagnose accurately and work unsupervised to produce a right first time fix. And back in my day it meant an extra year at college over being a time served mechanic.

Clearly not the case here.

Also, to be fair to that particular brand, they don't offer a full workshop service only fast flow work. I.e service, mot, brake, suspension and exhaust and tyres.

They'd have a melt down if the daily job involved engine management diagnostics and major assembly overhaul.

I'd go down the sticky piston in caliper ,my friend had the same problem ,he went through 3 pairs of discs until he found the problem with the piston on the caliper wasn't returning properly .

I'm agreeing with above. If the original pads were worn then the piston will have been quite far out of the caliper and could have corrosion on it. When it's been pushed back in for the new pads it could be sticking and overheating the disc.

Haha ...Where as, I rub my hands in glee at the prospect, 'oooh Ive gotta find a fault what fun.

No you so right. I remember the days when technician actually meant some real qualifications had been earned. It seems to me like generalised flag indicating lack of training nowadays.

Finally, the saga is over.

Warped discs. I grabbed the paperwork and got out of there.... happy now but having to drive like a nun while they bed in. Wobble-free braking..... brilliant :)

No need to drive like a nun just sensible use of brakes and try to avoid heavy use for first few hundred miles.

Depends on the brakes, my last set of pads the break in procedure was advised as:

initially brake from 70mph to 10-15mph as heavily as conditions allow, repeat 10-15 times without letting brakes cool.

They are an aggressive pad (Carbotech) but have been very good.

It's the discs that he's got to bed in though.

I had brake disk warp on a brand new Kia Sorento which I had done only 800 miles. On doing some research I discovered I wasn't the only one this happened to around the same milage, but Kia didn't issue a recall. My guess is there was a faulty batch of discs manufactured
