Hi all.

I currently own a Canon 5D III and Fuji X-T2. I'm considering upgrading and wanted some input from people here. I'll probably keep the Canon, as I love the results and I've invested quite a lot in the glass to go with it. However, it's too cumbersome to always have with me. Therefore I like have a smaller option as well, but the X-T2 feels like old tech and I wonder if I could get better image quality from a newer model. The main requirements are size similar or smaller than the X-T2, quick AF for capturing my kids running around and as good image quality as possible. Price would need to be below £2000 and I'd be open to other manufacturers. The obvious choice would seem to be an X-T5, however I'd like to know if there are any better options out there, or if Fuji are likely to put out another update soon and it's therefore worth waiting for an X-T6 or similar?

I don't recall seeing any details of a X-T5 replacement. I suspect that an X-T6 or X-T5ii would be incremental given that the X-T4 introduced IBIS and the X-T5 bumped to 40Mp.

For compactness the Sony family would be worth looking at - the A7cr is a very very neat little full frame camera if there is small lens that matches your needs to go with it.
 
I have Canon 7Dii, R7, Sony NEX5R, and A6600 and here are my thoughts !
7Dii built like a tank, reliable good feel, same size as 5D**
R7 smaller, lighter, mirrorless technology and AF is so much better, more flexible than DSLR AF points.
Sony NEX5R very small fits in a jacket pocket with kit lens 18-55, old mirrorless tech, 16mp good IQ, slow ish AF,
Sony A6600 nice small size ( bigger than NEX5R, smaller than R7), good weight, 24mp, good AF, very IQ, good for city breaks, days out, holidays ie carry on luggage.
 
My gut says take an R7 on the Canon test drive.
Haven’t checked against the size of the Fuji but I’d bet it’s similar. And with a much better focus system than your Fuji.
 
The only Fuji cameras I've had are the now ancient S602 pro zoom and a couple of X100 variants so my pinion might not be worth anything but I'm not sure Fuji focus is cutting edge but if you find it adequate for your use then that's the answer :D

Despite spending years with APS-C and FF Canon mirrorless I never really rated the ones I had and these days I much prefer mirrorless for the advantages that system brings so the Canon system is the one I'd ditch and in fact I did.

I'd question if you need two systems. In your place I'd be tempted to ditch the Canon and Fuji systems and go Sony FF. The mini SLR style cameras are quite compact and the A7c range even more so but lenses are size and weight wise all over the place depending on focal length/range and aperture but Sony lenses do tend to be amongst the most compact in each class.

I've just added a Sony A7cII to my little collection and it's got me thinking about selling just about everything else and the focus system is I think competitive too.

Good luck choosing but a single quality FF system that is quite compact might be a possible way to think about going, cost allowing.
 
Upgrade to a film Camera or, preferably, a selection of film cameras.

Or spend the money on going where there are more interesting photo opportunities?

Good call, in 20 yrs you will remember the photo's but unlikely you will recall what camera you used.

But you will have the hairs spots and fingerprints on your shots and negatives to remind you of all the fun times.

You can have the best of both worlds.

Get a 10 year old digital camera and pop the card in the post so you have to wait for the results.
 
Thanks for the responses. I'll need to do some research on the above recommendations. At first glance the A7CII looks quite interesting.
