Hi all :)

Is it worth upgrading my Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 to a Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L ? He wants £300 for the lens.

I have a canon 600D and a Canon 40D cameras.

Well that's down to you really. How often do you use your lens, are you finding any problems with your lens?

The image quality will be much improved, you'll lose 50-70 + 200-250mm reach, but gain speed at the long end.

Do it if you can spare the cash, the 70-200 f4 is a lovely lens in all versions of it .

The 70-200 f4L lens is an absolute cracker of a lens. It was my 3rd L lens after a 100 macro and a 100-400 and I replaced my 55-250 with it and the 55-250 went to the wife. It's very sharp throughout the whole range of f stops and the whole focal length, it's quite light and very robust. £300 is a decent price for the lens as well. I paid around £360 for mine and sold it for about the same when I got the f2.8 IS version. If this is your first L lens beware though, your wallet may never be as full again.

The 55-250 is a very well respected lens though, it's got very good optics, the AF speed is pretty good and the IS is very good. If your just replacing the 55-250 for the sake of having an L lens you need to think of what you'd be gaining and losing. You'd gain a great lens with excellent IQ, but you'd lose a bit of reach and IS too. If you're going to be using fast shutter speeds then you wont need the IS though.

Quite happy with the lens (Canon EF-S 55-250mm) nice and light and easy to carry. only problems I had were in low light...but the IS very good.

If you are used to using IS and the new lens won't have it then I'd suggest first try shooting with you current lens at 200mm with the IS turned off.

Then check your pics for sharpness without IS.

You may find that you definitely need IS in low light and could be quite disappointed with the new lens in the same conditions due to blur and camera shake.

If you have to ask, then the answer is no!

When you want it bad enough, you wont need to ask others.

The IS makes a big difference. I upgraded from an old 55-200 non IS to a 55-250 and apart from extra reach the IS made a very big difference to me. Like others have said check you can do without IS first.

I want for the move from the 55-250 to the f4 and so glad I did. The sharpness, contrast, how fast the autofocus is. For £300 I would bite there hand off and get it. I asked mpbphotographic how much ai would get if I traded in and they said £290 so if you did try it and didnt like it you would lose either no money or a tiny bit depending on where you sell it.

Upgrade - the L series lenses are worth the effort and cost.

at that price as said bite his hand off there £485 new from wex if its good cond and working fine i will tell you what if you take it and dont like it i will give you what you paid for it lol you cant lose at that price you will get your money back all day long

I upgraded from a 55-250 to a 70-200 f4L when I got my 5D mkii, the 55-250 went to my other half and she loves it, almost as much as I love my 70-200 :)
Trust me go for it you won't regret it!!
The lens is sharp throughout and the colour and af speed blew me away.

As said above try yours without IS at 200mm and see what you think results wise, just bear in mind that the 70-200L will be sharper and AF faster.
Personally I think it's a fantastic lens at a VERY good price!!
