Should I take my camera on holiday or leave it at home...

Marcel - I'll be there while your there albeit some hundreds of miles west of you!

I will be taking my gear :) 'Dixons' as my non-photographic friends and travelling companions call my camera bag :)

If you've seen my latest threads (B&Q, Sainsburys, Garden Centres and Redditch) you'll figure out why I'm taking the gear with me :D

Good grief, Man! Wassamatterwithyou? Leave the stickies at home and take the cameras.

And yes, hotel safes are large enough for a body and a couple lenses - and a big fold of beer vouchers.

this place is worth a visit..if you havent been there you wont believe it

pammukale its inland a bit but on the tourist trail

Hmmm we're in Fethiye.....

that'd be east of Bodrum :D

while you're there check out the fish market - especially the resturant and if you get chance, and can cope with the hordes the beech at Olu Deniz is supposed to be one of the best in the world, and try pargliding there too (if you're that way inclined)

H

Marcel I think we have the perfect solution to your problem about the camera! You stay at home guarding the camera and one of us will go in your place!!! Simples!!

Hmmm Marcel and I shared our positions (ooh err) on a map and I'm pretty damn sure he was way East of me.....unless we're at cross purposes here!

nah you're definatly east of Bodrum, and about 120 miles further into Asia

Well you've decided now but I just wanted to say:

Marcel - Bodrum Castle is well worth a visit and I would want my DSLR if I were going there again. The whole harbour area in Bodrum is very nice actually. My favourite area of Turkey although we stayed in Bitez and I havn't actually been to your resort.

John - Olu Deniz beach (it's a national reserve I think) is indeed lovely and there are paragliders etc landing all the time which makes for interesting shots. There is also the "ghost" town of Kayakoy which is worth a visit with the camera. Fethiye itself isn't all that photogenic but you do have a good chance of spotting sea turtle from the harbour which is a bonus! We stayed above Olu Deniz (right up in the mountains) and saw some beautiful sunsets too.

Hope you both have great holidays

Ah Mr Marcel is going to Altinkum not Bodrum and Fethiye seems to be way east of Bodrum but somewhat west of Altinkum!

Thanks Fi :) My appetite is whetted :)

there's two along that coast, one quite far East of Fiethye and Antalya, and one about 30miles North of Bodrum, across the bay from it.

To whet Marcel's appetite more, Ephesus (if your interested in that sort of thing) is only an hour away from the one North of Bodrum, and the lakes at Bafa Golu are stunning aswell

John, I think when we exchanged locations...I may have sent you on a bum steer :$

I got fed up lugging my D700 and 24-70 round on my past 2 holidays. In fact on the second one, I took my compact and barely used the D700.

Went to Edinburgh for a long weekend the other week and just took my compact (LX-3), and I didn't miss the SLR for a minute. For the majority of my holiday snaps, there's very little that an SLR can do that a good compact can't.

i used a canon g10 last year and that is what got me into dslr
i wanted better qualiy pictures

I've been thinking the same myself lately. This will be the 7th or 8th time we'll have been to Turkey [going to Turkbuku in just over a week] and can't wait, but I've not taken a DSLR before and was debating just how much kit to take. Previously we'd just taken our Casio P&S and the results are OK for family snaps, but nothing you'd want to put on the wall.

I think I'll just take my 450D without the grip, but can't decide on 18-55 IS or 28-105 USM as a single walkaround. Decisions, decisions...

Take it with you Marcel, get a small Lowepro bag and just carry it around with one lens as that won't exactly be heavy and it'll only take a moment to get out if you feel the need to take a photo or two :) It's not often you get to travel to places like that is it so make the most of it while you're there

I'd usually take my DSLR away with me rather than a P&S - but with a walkabount lens only

I take my camera on every family holiday.
If it is not with me, then I usually find that in most hotel safes abroad, there is room for a DLSR and lens. If not, I ask at reception for a larger safe. I therefore usually limit it to the one lens, unless I am on holiday in Britain, then it all goes, tripod included.
The chances are you will see things that you may never get to photograph again. I still look back at older holiday pics, wishing I had a better quality glass with me at the time.
I would however ensure that every eventuality is covered on your insurance.

You answered your own question I think;)

I went skiing in Canada and had the same decision to make. (plus the risk of falling and breaking my gear) in the end I took my G9 (bought secondhand on the site) and it was ideal. Win win situation, OH was happy I was happy and lots of great skiing and pictures into the bargain.

We've been going to the same places in Crete for the past 12 years or so and I still find new places and new shots to take. Mind you, we do stay in small, family run places where the security is the owners who live at the entry point to the block, so I'm not worried about leaving the kit in the room while we're out.

I'm not really one for lying on the beach all day - wife does that while I go off with the camera. I take an 8mm fisheye and zooms from 12-300mm, all mated to a D700 (would take the D70 as well, fo the extra reach but that space is taken by the D10) as well as a waterproof (gods, this one had better be more so than the last!) compact. I also take a small dyesub printer for creating my own, personalised postcards to send home as well as to allow me to give friends there prints if they want them. And a netbook for quick edits and web access when wi-fi's available.

Perhaps, it's a good time to consider a Panasonic G1 or GF-1 with 14-45mm kit lens and/or 20mm pancake? ;)

If I were in a position where I was undecided on taking a DSLR or not then I'd probably go with a micro Four Thirds camera as a very capable compromise which isn't a burden to carry and should fit in most hotel safes.

Definitely a job for Micro Four Thirds - I'd be inclined to take an Olympus E-PL1 as a very capable alternative. have a good holiday. :)

Thanks for the replies again guys :)

Next question....Insurance! Where the hell do I start?

Ooooh lots of replies!
Thanks for the advice everyone. Seems opinion is fairly split down the middle.

I think I would be comfortable leaving it in the room. Maybe shove the body in the safe and a lens in a knicker drawer :p

It's more when Im out and about tbh, and it being a burden. Heavily dangling around my neck and not being able to put it down.

I think I will take it, and just leave it behind when not in use. I'll be leaving a laptop in the room when Im not using it anyway.

tiler, thanks for your very kind offer mate  I think the problem isn't the size, just the 'cumbersomeness' of it, and the 'unpocketability' of an SLR.

We're going to just north of Bodrum in Altinkum.
I have a laptop bag, but might try and find a smallish camera bag that I can take too. (Was tempted to try and shove it all in my MiniTrekker, but I now realise that bag is overkill and too big for the trip).

Some great photo opportunities just up the road from Altinkum at Didum (Ancient Temple) and just up the road from there and turn left, if you climbover the hedge there are the remains of an ancient town. It's a long time since we went, but we were shown it by the man who had a little workshop opposite carving onyx.

Lots of photo opportunities in Turkey. Beautiful sunsets every night

Not wanting to hi-jack the thread but I have a similar dilemma. I'm away in two weeks (for 2 weeks) to Crete. The 5Dmk2 is definitely coming, as is the 24-105.

What I'm debating currently is whether or not the 70-200 f/4.0 IS stays at home or not. It's not a light lens to lug around if I don't use it much. Should I take the 17-40 instead or rationalise to the 24-105?

Opinions welcome...

Next question....Insurance! Where the hell do I start?

Start by contacting your home insurance and check what cover you have. Probably a lot cheaper to extend that than get specialised insurance.

I've taken all my lenses before and really never used anything other than the 24-105 and 10-22, except at Florida in the everglades and shuttle launch when the 100-400 came into it's own.

The house insurance isn't an avenue to go down....it'll be specific camera insurance
