Like most, I am a windows user ever since i have been using computers. I have never been fascinated by the windows. For the couple of years i have been introduced to the world of Apple thru iphone. So it all started here, now i cant think of any other brand when it comes to phones.

Now i have been thinking about switching to Mac (laptop). I read people like me who turned to macbook have never looked back at the windows. I have never used mac but when i recently checked out my friends macbook, i have been really impressed. And secondly my current windows laptop is on its last legs. So i thouught why not go for apple.

Whats yours take ? What are the pros and cons?

I did just this and have no regrets. I find the whole OS easier to get on with but it is frustrating to learn a whole new set of shortcuts and how things work / what are they called compared to a Windows OS.

We still have 2 windows machines at home so have not completely left it behind. This might be why I'm picking up the knowledge more slowly than I thought I would.

I bought a Macbook in 2007 to find out what all the fuss was about, and used it side by side with my work laptop - and since 2010 when I became self employed have worked almost exclusively with my MacBook and latterly a MacBook Air.

I absolutely love the way my Mac works, and almost all of the programs. As someone else said, it is a learning curve and the early days were most frustrating learning new ways, but as someone who has worked on them every single day since 2007 I would say, yeah give it a go! :)

Try it, if you like it then do it. But don't expect some magical never having issues experience like some would have you believe ;)

This, try it and see how you like it. We went mac in our house because the office space was small so the iMac was the best option. Since then the wife has gone Apple crazy. Me, I am equivocal and could use either.

Mac is not perfect by any means and they still have issues however they still have a lot less than windows and the OS is so slick I would never go back (that's how I see it, a backward step) to windows.

id say in the last month 80% of my support logs have been from mac users (a LOT of Mountain Lion issues, Adobe CS4 crashing, printing issues, network issues etc).

bring back snow leopard..

Really?

I definitely feel Apple are losing their way at the moment. At a guess, they are starting to suffer from having to support multiple hardware & software systems consistently.

really. most of it seems to be stemming from mountain lion. according to our usual engineer from our mac reseller (who came out to fix some mbp retina faults under warranty) snow leopard is selling for silly money these days, it really doesnt surprise me.

as a business platform they really are sucking at the moment. and they just seem to be sticking 2 fingers up.

Ive often wondered this. The only thing i seem to have an issue with now is my photograph colours.....! This is why im thinking a mac maybe......

..... and they just seem to be sticking 2 fingers up.

But that is the Apple way. Not sure that they listen to what people want - they just decide and people buy. I think that the integration between products works out better, but your choices are fewer than with Windows.

Apple for me, after years in IT looking after pc's, apple, while not perfect, what is?, they are far more stable, and simpler to fix.

We now have 9 and I am contemplating a retina laptop, but they are silly money .!

i can see more businesses moving away from apple if they continue to be honest.

i work in IT too, what do i win ;)

simpler to fix? no. more stable? no.

This.

I've had a macbook for a year now an it is great, however the OS is so so. It's certainly not bad but it's not better than Windows either, they are just different. My next laptop will probably be a windows laptop depending on what has the best price/performance/style ratio. I bought the MBA because it was the cheaper of the options I was looking at that fit my wants/needs, like I think all people should do!:p

But definitely, if you want to give it a go, give it a go, nothing worse than sticking with one product all the time just because. :)

macs may have some issues here and there but that's nothing in comparison to how bad windows / wintel hardware treat their users. I am going mac only at the moment

Rubbish, the are all the same... It's like the whole "Mac never crashes" argument... That died for me on the second day of ownership and my MBA crashed... Get a good laptop from any brand and you'll get high quality. Get a cheap £500 laptop with windows on and it won't compare to the £1200 windows or Apple laptop. :)

Your always going to get the Mac / Windows haters on a thread like this. I went with Mac a while ago and even though we still have 3 Windows laptops, I dont like using them now. I'm not saying one is better than the other ( although some would say otherwise) but, Mac OSX just seems slicker. No viruses, no de-frags, no constant updating for security fixes ( Mac does have these very occasionally)
I have a 2007 Macbook running Lion. A 2008 iMac running Mountain Lion and an old ( 2002) powermac running Leopard. apart from the powermac needing a new power unit soon, ( it still runs perfectly) I dont remember having any issues with any of the os's or hardware since I bought them.
Meanwhile, my Wifes brand new Dell Latitude laptop packed up within a day and the replacement packed up after 3 days.
The only problems I get on my iMac are MS Office Word and Excell crashing, which they do everytime I use them ( this happens on my Macbook too) so I am now changing over to Pages and Numbers from Apple.

My experience of having 8 dell servers, 10 dell desktops for around 5 years and not one failure apart from hard disks on the servers.

No viruses, no spyware, no windows re-installs. No software crashes apart from small companies poorly tested software which we resolved.

So issues with PCs??? big fat 0

Biggest issue I have had on my laptop?? apple software using constantly high cpu load even after multiple restarts.

So both sides of the story have similar stories.

Lots of people compare XP to OSX, this isn't a fair comparison. You really have to compare Windows 7 to OSX. It is completely different to XP.

youll find a lot of people starting to run anti-malware at least, shall we talk about flashback? i cant remember the last time i defragged a pc, its just not needed with modern file systems. and microsoft release update every fortnight, not exactly constant.

interesting, which model(s)? i can count on 1 hand the amount of hardware failures (that weren't a result of user damage) from our latitudes over the years spanning the D600/800 ranges up to the 630/830 then onto the E5/6xx0, now the newer models latitude E's and s few precisions. we must have had 100's of them.

the early versions of office were pretty poor, i cant say we've had any bother with 2011 though.

yeah i mean as above, i think we've only ever had 1 motherboard in a laptop and 1 screen failure off the top of my head over the years and a few server PSUs (thats why theyre redundant, PSU fail when on 24/7..) and hard drives.

Lots of people compare XP to OSX, this isn't a fair comparison. You really have to compare Windows 7 to OSX. It is completely different to XP.

id compare snow leopard to 7 in terms of reliability, theyre both excellent. lion and mountain lion have gone down hill in my opinion.

To the people content with running no anti-virus... The viruses out there now are designed to steal your personal information via browser exploits/redirects or javascript exploits. ALL browsers have these on them and the infection is OS agnostic (although Chrome at least does tend to warn of phishing scams).

Clearly, up to you, but if you are running NO protection, you are as safe as a Windows user running no protection ;)

See, fopr example:

As I said, up to you of course ;)

No viruses, wouldn't be too sure about that depending on what you mean by viruses, and anyway they are easy enough to avoid on windows and have been for 8-10 years. If you download something dodgy then it'll come back to haunt you, just less of them for OSX because there is a smaller target market. As mentioned, many people use anti-malware at least. I've also scanned my mac with an online scanner (from a reputable source) after having an incident with my email account, the first one ever, which for the last two years has been accessed exclusively from my Macbook and my phone...

No De-frags, you haven't needed to do that on Windows for the last 5 years, at least to say it's an automatically done part of Windows since Vista. Manually defragging went the way of the dodo after XP was replaced.

Updates and security fixes. My mac runs lion and aside from the dodgy wifi (which was supposed to have been fixed?!) I get new security/updates every couple of weeks it seems, not much different to my windows desktop.

So anyway... NEXT!

That shouldn't happen, especially to a Lattitude. There is a reason many companies use them... However that sort of thing can happen to any company, including Apple... For example my last laptop lasted 4 years before I replaced it with this, no problems, except an issue with the power adaptor after 3 years, easily solved by buying a replacement.

As I said, in reality no different as long as you buy a like for like machine.
