I've got a 2005 mini one diesel - quite a good one, 6 speed box, 1.4 engine, etc. it's nearly done 100,000. I've been offered a direct swap for a 2002 Discovery ES Premium Facelift with about 80k. That's a top end model - cream leather, parking sensors, 4 speed auto, 2.5 diesel. I know obviously it'll be expensive to run due to MPG but very tempted.. Would this be a silly move? Even the old Discos do look dead good, especially from the front!
 
The disco will drink like an alcoholic at a free bar!

Do you need an "off roader?"... In quotation marks as if the answer is yes, you'd get a defender!

Why does the other person want to swap? Best thing to do is look at glass's or parkers guides and check the value of each.... and go from there.
 
Also with being registered after 1st March 2001 it will fall into the category of the horrible "Tax band" system. If I remember right that model of disco is a band K for tax, which is £280 a year. If it was registered before the 1st of march 2001 then it would only be £225 a year. Your mini, correct me if I'm wrong should only be £20 a year for tax.

My boss has had many of them. He eventually gave up and got and old Defender. It's still costly to repair but don't have to repair it as often lol.
 
They wanted to swap becUse if fuel economy.. The only reason in thinking is because it is a step up the pecking order.. And the mini is a tad girly.. Hardly need a 2.5 tonne vehicle in the centre if town, just a little tug on the heart rather than brain tbh.. :P

If you really think an old Discovery is a "step up the pecking order.." and this is important to you, go ahead, but take the previous posts on board. These vehicles are notoriously unreliable, expensive to repair/maintain and guzzle fuel. 4 x 4s are popular in SA and I know a few people who owned the Discovery. The high cost of ownership didn't matter to to them, but they traded in because of the poor reliability and after sales service.
 
i had a freelander once as a hire car. The absolute highlight to me, was I could put the rear window down by using button on the armrest. .. that was the most exciting thing about it! Have driven disco's and meh!
 
That era of LR excluding Defender have as already been stated a fairly awful reputation for quality control although the suggestion of massive bills every month and being without it for a month is not the standard, unless the garage used for maintenance is complete useless or con artists, I have owned land rovers for getting on for 13 years now in fact ever since starting to learn how to drive and on he whole they have been reliable, However the 1994-2004 era vehicles were let down by electrics on the whole that honestly were poorly designed, cheaply manufactured and bolted together by chimps, modern era JLR products are in fact much better...

But having said that would I suggest you make this move, NO unless you need what the car can do I would say don't buy it
 
this a no for me just in fuel cost alone it will be lucky to get 20 mpg on local runs
 
NO you will be letting yourself into a world of pain......

The name OFF ROAD will take on a whole new meaning;)
 
Ahhh looks like I should stay sensible then I think.. Ah well, shall hold off until I can afford an 08 ish Disco!
 
Try looking on www.swapz.co.uk, You put you ad up and if people are interested they will offer you with something you're after. I've seen people wanting to swap cars for double cookers lol. I put my project car on there which is worth about 40k for a laugh and some of the offers I had was just stupid lol
